I have a gun case that is over sized by the lenght+hight+width dimensions even though it is under the weight limit. Have any of you had your luggage measured by United or Air Namibia? The United site states the dimensional limit is 62 linear inches. My case is 78 inches. Thanks and Semper Fi Will

Will. By defination of the different European Air Companies, the linear limitations are for standard baggage, big suitcases and such. Gun cases are pr. defination special baggage and are exempt the linear limitations. At least that what I have been told by KLM, Air France and Lufthansa Arild Iversen.

I've never had a ticket agent pull a tape on a rifle case (or golf club travel case) yet I know that they are over the limit. I did have one pulled on a duffle headed to the Bahamas a few years ago but talked the lady out of charging me. I since bought a duffle that is 65" but have yet to have anyone measure it. "...Africa. I don't have time to look it up, but IIRC you are allowed one piece of "sporting equipment" (gun case, skis, golf clubs, etc.) that is exempt from the regular linear limit. Or at least, you used to be. ______________________ RMEF Life Member SCI DRSS Chapuis 9,3/9,3 + 20/20 Simson 12/12/9,3 Zoli 7x57R/12 Kreighoff .470/.470 We band of 9,3ers! The Few. The Pissed. The typical policy with most airlines is that the 50-lb weight limitation applies to "sporting equipment", but not the linear limitation. Thus, golf bags, snow skis, gun cases, etc. will be carried as a regular checked bag, provided they do not exceed 50-lbs and do not exceed whatever their maximum linear limitation is for oversized baggage. HOWEVER, as rapidly as airlines are adopting new "revenue enhancements" for baggage, I don't expect this exception to last very much longer. Frankly, we're riding on the coattails of the golfers, who are very important airline leisure travelers. The airlines don't want to offend the golf resorts, who depend on clients getting there via air, so the resorts may push the airlines to keep the golf bags free, and maybe the same will continue to apply to gun cases. Let's hope.

look under sporting equipemnet under the airline you are flying under baggage requirement or rules. You will find that there is a linear or length limit although longer than a standard bag. If it exceeds it it is very costly. I had a rod case that was less than an inch over their limit and they popped me for 125 bucks for oversize. Yes, she brought out the tape measure,,, I had made several trips with the same case, same airline, same destination,,,,, but a new emphasis,, less customer service and charge them for whatever we can. I paid it,,, and went fishin,,,,, you can make more money, you can not make more time

Thank you for all of the good input. The golf thing may work for me. I have purchased an SKB hard golf case to put my rifles in. I have been able to pack them nice and tight in the soft cases and some fitted closed cell foam and clothes. Both my gun case and the golf case are over the 62 inch limit. I will recheck the airline web sites soon. I am six weeks out from our trip and now all the details are creping up on me. Thanks again Will
