Suppressors to Africa

Wendell ReichSuppressors to Africa
I saw on another site a guy who took his suppressor to South Africa.
Has anyone here taken their can out of the country? Sounds kind of risky to me, but I also don’t know the law.
Personally, until there is a very clear track record, I’m not going to risk it.

K EvansI have not taken a suppressor out of the country, but, yes you can. CBP treats it pretty much like anything else on a 4457. Silencer Central has a pretty good article about it on their website. Still, I'm not going to chance it.

Michael RobinsonI agree with you both 100%.
It can be done legally, but all it would take is for one ignorant official to assert his ignorance as if it were fact and thereby make your life temporarily but sufficiently long enough to miss a flight miserable.
I have run into too many ignorant officials in my time to be willing to run that risk.

This is exactly my concern.
Unilateral ignorance or malice is a bigger danger than the law.
One person, who wants to do his job a little too well in front of a supervisor has caused me untold number of headaches.
In Romania, it took over an hour for someone to approve my already approved gun license. The problem? The boss from Bucharest was in the office and nobody wanted to make a decision.
Also consider the rabid anti-hunters. I have been bumped out of business class and into coach as the plane is boarding bc the agent found out I was hunting.
The risks are currently too high for me to do this.

I think one of the bigger problems we all have to be aware of when traveling these days are anti-hunters. They can, and will, screw things up for hunters simply out of spite. I think that’s a good reason to travel as inconspicuously as possible. I don’t wear camo or have a camo carry-on when flying. I consciously try to blend in as much as possible.

Agreed. I just bought an EXO pack. I could do camo or green. I went with green so I could pass as a greenie backpacker.

DMansonBy way of information, several friends of mine hunted ZA properties earlier this year (sadly I wasn't able to join them) that required suppressors for plains game hunting. The outfitter arranged for suppressors to be made in ZA, for which they paid approximately $250.00 each when they arrived.
My friends were impressed with the quality and effectiveness of the suppressors; unfortunately, they had to be left behind, but remain available for future hunts.

The last nail in the coffin!
A farmer demanding that I install a suppressor on my rifle??
Not on your life!
Where do they come up with these stupid rules!
Oh, I get it.
We are shooting close to the houses!!

21 September 2022, 21:53
Michael RobinsonClose to the house, indeed.
I have never heard of suppressors being required to hunt anywhere.
I have had them offered to me, when mounted on a loaner/rental rifle, but never required.
As for paying $250 for a suppressor and then having to leave it behind, that seems odd. Why not just use one of the others that have been left behind?
On the other hand, in the USA, suppressors are more expensive than $250. One must pay $200 for the tax stamp alone!

Hopefully this goes away. There is a lawsuit that the State of Texas has against the government that could be somewhat interesting. The most baffling thing to me is that the ATF is saying a suppressor is not a firearm so it can be restricted, yet the Gun Control Act (NFA) calls a suppressor a firearm. Double speak at it's finest, but I am sure there is more to it than what I have been reading. If it is indeed a firearm, the supreme court might be conservative enough to finally start allowing them without restrictions. We would have allowed them long ago just like most of the rest of the world but moron mouth breathers who watch movies still fully believe that a gun makes zero sound with a silencer.

Great comment, but was “baffling” an intended pun?
I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.

Michael RobinsonLet us hope that sensible people take over our Congress and the White House, oust these Communists and socialists and idiots from power, and restore common sense to our policies and laws.
I, for one, am sick and tired of being assumed and treated like a criminal in so many ways, including, not least, with respect to ownership of firearms.

Hahahahaha!
Sensible people in politics?
Keep on dreaming my friend.
We make our own when we want one.
And can put it on any rifle or handgun!

That is my deepest worry.
"We" have become the Communist rabble.
If I move to Dubai, will you make me an honorary sheikh?

Just kidding.
I have feeble hopes, still yet, for our short term experiment in republican democracy.

Mike,
I don't think you would wish to be made one, and I certainly have no wish to give you your wish.
Someone did ask me how to become a sheikh before, I told him by joining the family.
All he needed do is bend over!
We were at a party, and the laughter was non stop!
He still gets people asking him if he has become a sheikh!
He says he should have kept his mouth shut!

Matt NormanNope! I don't take firearms (or suppressor's ) to Africa. Too many dipshits that can cause grief to deal with. My PH has really good rifles for me to use. After seven trips I don't take rifles nor try to export trophies.

sounds like a very good option.
