The wife and I leave from DFW on August 13 for our first trip to South Africa. We will be hunting for 6 days and then to Cape Town for 3 days of sight seeing. Check lists from four different sources have been completed and the first round of packing will start tonight. I am sure we will pack, unpack and repack several times before it is completed. I am also sure we will forget something.

The trip has been paid for in advance so what ratio of travelers cheques to cash would you take on a trip like this?

Dick,

Safe travels and good hunting! Last time I was there, I used my credit card most of the time in Cape Town (notified bank prior to departure) and almost all traveler's checks with my outfitter (cleared that with him in advance).

Whereabouts are you hunting?

I'm 8 days and counting for my first trip to Africa (Namibia). No sidetrips for me so I won't need for as much cash.

We are heading for the Lompopo province around Lephalale.
Good idea about the PH and t/c.

Thanks

I hope ya'll have a great hunt and a great trip.

I would take in cash the amount of money I figured I would spend, then take the reserve in TC.

Let me know when you get back and I will come up to hear your hunt story "first hand".

What guns and loads have you decided to carry?

I know you will have a great hunt, there is nothing like Africa.

Leaving for RSA, East Cape, on the 20th of August. Flying from Minneapolis to New York, JFK, then that 18 hour flight to Jo'berg. Overnight at the Afton House, then on to Port Elizabeth on the 22nd. Will be picked up by Denham Bowker for a two hour trip to Grahamstown. Plan to hunt 18 days.

This will be our third trip to RSA. Had orginally planned to hunt a Sable and my wife a Roan, along with six other animals each. We found out a month ago that the price of a Sable was now $10,000 and a Roan $10,500. Too high!! A little disappointed, but we are sure we will find some animals to substitue for the Sable and the Roan.

From our last two trips, we have mounted, Impalas, Warthogs, Black Wildebeest, Kudu, Cape Eland, Diker, Bushbuck, Black Springbuck, Cape Springbuck, Red Hartebeest, Blesbuck, Bontebok, Nyala, Steenbok.

This year we have on our list: Blue Wildebeest, White Springbuck, White Blesbuck, Zebra, Fallow Deer, and Waterbuck. Also plan to shoot some non trophy animals at the suggestion of our PH.

We would greatly appreciate any suggestion that anyone out there might have for other trophy animals that we might want to hunt, excluding the Big Five.

J P, one of my hunting rules is that is better to pack it and not need it than need and not pack it. With that said I always forget something. I will let you know what it is when I get back.

Tony, the mod70 375h&h is loaded with 270gr tsx and 74gr of rl15. The Savage 308 has 165gr tsx with 44.5gr of varget. Both shoot sub moa.

Sounds good. The 308 worked great for my wife on plains game in Zim, including kudu, wildebeast and zebra.

I shot a bushbuck, honeybadger and a heyena with it myself.

Have a great trip.
