Question on a 64 inch Suitcase

Has anyone ever taken a piece of luggage that was 1 or 2 inches more than the allowance.

We are fling this summer, have two suitcases that measure 32 X 16 X 16 totaling 64 inches.

The regs say 62 inches in total.

Has anyone ever had them measure for being 1 in to wide and 1 inch to deep?

We don't want oversized fees, but was wondering why they even sell a suitcase that size...

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated,

I carry a Samsonite spinner that I think is 64 inches. I have taken it many times and it has never been questioned or measured. They only care about the weight.

I worried about that and even bought a special gun case but no one checked the sizes of any or our bags. I'm sure they would if they were grossly oversize.

With airlines, you just never know. I traveled for years with carry-on luggage that was too big and never had a problem.

More recently I bought new luggage that fit the actual size limits, just to avoid the chance of having to paying for luggage.

Could you alter the luggage somehow (i.e. remove an extra handle, etc) to make it meet the specs?

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Bob,

You've got lots of money invested in a safari. Why would you take the chance that your luggage is too large and you'll have a hassle. African travel can be fraught with unanticipated problems why not eliminate as many of them as you can see beforehand? When they first changed the size of the luggage allowed I went to check in and the agent measured my large Victorinox bag, told me it was too large and explained he could refuse to accept it. The flight was not full and they took the bag but what if they refused it?

Mark is right 100%.

I travel a lot, a hell of a lot. I have flown 3.7 million miles on one airline alone. I thought I had seen it all. I was wrong.

I had a Sitka day pack as my carry on during a particular trip. I just happened to have some extremely valuable things in it on this particular trip. Out of the blue, the airlines told me it was too big and I would have to check it. I will bet I have flown with that bag 20 times.

This happened in a civilized country. Africa? Not a chance in hell would I try that.

Generally the problem I have is I run out of weight limit before suitcase size. But if you want a hassle free trip, best to spend a few bucks and get a Samsonite F'Lite 31" Spinner. Not only secure but light and airline compliant.

I have seen enough folks getting hassled at JNB airport over overweight or improperly packed bags to know that it is not worth the risk.

Take less stuff and get a smaller bag.

I have never been on a trip and wish I had packed more.

Differently? Yes.

More? Heck no.

So this means Tuffpac's are too big. How how do you fly with two rifle's and meet the size limit?

There are normally sporting items exceptions for size but not for weight. No problems and no extra charges have ever been applied to my Tuffpak.

Thanks Seamaster, I've not flown with guns for many years, reading this thread made me question my packing plans for a hunt in Zim later this year.
