Flying into JNB before heading out into the bush, any decent bourbon in the duty free shop?

Thanks

Yep, they stock just about everything your local liquor store stocks.Prices are pretty close to the same as at home, too.

Try Basil Hayden. Good stuff. Not to expensive.

They have Basil there? One of my favorites, if I can get my hands on that or any of the buffalo trace line... will make the honeymoon that much more enjoyable... but heck I’ll be in Africa on safari with my new wife.. think it’s a win all the way around!

Anyone know if JNB has Blanton's? Stuff is freaking unobtainable here, maybe a it's not so popular in JNB.

Being a Kentuckian, I am always on lookout for bourbon. I have only seen crap like Jim Beam and Maker's in JNB airport. Most of the other stuff is regular whiskey or Scotch, not bourbon.

I wish they carried Basil. That is my day to day go to, and I hate flying over with 8 extra pounds to have good bourbon or Tequila. If you find some good stuff, let me know.

Tim,

Your assessment is still correct. They have every variety of Jack and scotch known to man but nothing in the way of quality bourbon.

Returned Last week from 2 weeks in Africa and enjoyed an Eagle Rare, if anything made it taste that much better.

Rick, I bet it did.

Guys, Blanton’s is really hard to find right in the Bluegrass. Since China and Japan decided they like bourbon, the whole market and supply has changed. They sell for 2-3 times the price to Asia, and we all suffer.

Yes, they get a shipment in about once a month and it sells out within a couple hours or less. The popularity of it down here is crazy. Even WL Weller they have trouble keeping on the shelf.

You can buy Blantons at five different stores in Gainesville, TX. When I worked in Lexington in the early nineties everyone in the horse industry drank Makers Mark as their standard drinking whisky...it just stuck with me. But I have never seen it (Makers) in Africa either.

They pretty much always have Makers Mark in the duty free in Joburg.

I never shop in the airport except sometimes on the way out if I need a trinket or something.

I have never seen it at a hunting camp in TZ, Zim, or Uganda...I should say.

When hunting...I usually refrain to 2-3 beers in the evening them off to bed early.

Blanton's must be must be good stuff! Since I like my bourbon and you Southerners are recommending Blanton's I went to the local Total Wine and asked for it. They said they had 2 cases come in the day before and it was all gone. If it's that good I'll keep an eye out for it. It doesn't even make it to the shelves. They just stack it by the front door and it goes.

And thus the competition to own a bottle of Blantons grows.

I know the OP's original question was about bourbon but, there is a RSA single grain whisky called Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky that is damn fine. Has won a bunch of international awards. Can find it in Namibia and here in FL too.

My “boutique” liquor shop down the street said they just sold out of their last Blanton’s shipment. I asked to be notified of the next.

Blanton's can be found pretty regular around here as with almost all the other bourbons except for Pappy Van Winkle.

I tried Pappy once and it didn’t do much to justify the price.

As an aside, my buddy was ordering Johnny Black at dinner and they thought he said Blue (he’s from Ecuador and maybe the accent), but the tab was $47 for each of his two. We worked it out, but damn.

Well, I probably burned out my taste buds growing up on Wild Turkey so wouldn't know good bourbon anymore. But at least wasn't like Grandpa...He drank Old Crow...And not for the taste but for the 'economical value'.

Old Crow is said to be the whiskey of choice of U.S.Grant, and due to who produces it I think of it as Poor Man's Jim Beam.
