Another hunter arrived in JHB without bags and ammo - he had to hunt with someone elses ammo which did not perform well and had to borrow clothes - a plan was made but why should so many hunters and travellers have so many problems with SAA. Its simple the arrogance of the senior officials - the top man was fired for hiding self given bonuses and lied to the media at every turn - the remaining top brass perform no better as they are generaly politicaly connected. So when you have a problem and you will - you will deal with arrogance and a go to hell attitude. Hunters constantly warn travellers about problems with SAA yet we still see hunters travelling with them and then see their safari start with frustration ,lost luggage, and unhelpfull staff . Hunters you have been warned fly with SAA and suffer the consequences.

I tighten my luggage prior to every trip.

No loose luggage here!

That's why I fly Delta as far as I possibly can. Big Grin And, that is also why I switched to hard-sided luggage without zippers. . . . . tu2

UEG,

Which luggage are you using? The airline managed to render my favorite hard sided bag unusable the last time my wife flew with it.

I am using Samsonite hard sided luggage. It wasn't cheap, but it has been well worth it for the last 3 Safari trips and a Mexican cruise that we returned from in January. It has TSA locks and has kept the real miscreants out of our luggage and away from our belongings.

My last three trips were done with all carry on luggage and no guns. I did not check a bag to CAR or to Cameroon and each hunt was beyond 14 days. Travel light. Lay out your gear and leave half at home.

My list-
One pair of hunting shoes
One pair of shoes to travel in.
3 pr underwear - quick drying
3 pr socks -smartwool or cotton
2 pair shorts or long depending on weather- cheap cargo type
1 travel shirt to wear traveling
1 pr travel long pants to wear traveling
2 shirts - cheap cotton or rip stop from Cabelas or Columbia
1 jacket to wear on the plane
1 hat
1 belt- wear on plane
Digital camera
binos
book or two
shaving kit with small bottles
quick dry small towell
sunglasses
cell phone and charger

Buy candy/gum/etc at duty free and get a free bag to carry on.

Anything else is at the camp. If you forget something, buy it in Joberg airport or Windhoek or Lusaka.

Leave the hunting clothes behind when you leave.

Travel without guns and your problems disappear. I have rented guns each time - Win Model 70's and CZ's. All were very nice and performed perfectly.

The rental of the guns was cheaper than the permits to get them in.

My wife adds a hairdryer if one is not in camp and rollers for her hair.

Travel light and enjoy the trip more.

The other option is to travel business or first class. I do that and have not lost any luggage. They tag it with different tags and it gets off the plane first usually.

ALL airlines can/will lose your luggage from time to time, so don't know that this trait is particular to any ONE airline. Pay your money, take your chances is a good way to think of it in these days and times.

I have had better luck with SAA than the other airlines. Had a flight on Turkish airlines 3 years ago and not only did they lose my rifle case, they also lost my bow case. Turns out, they took the 2 off the plane in Istanbul and just left them there. Did get the stuff back but 6 weeks later. Nobody's perfect and it happens.
I want to hunt with my guns. I have spent the time to work up the ammo with them, become familiar with the trigger pull and recoil, the feel. For me that is part of the fun. I always insure them for the value so in case the unthinkable happens....

Here are a few tips. Be sure you allow plenty of connecting time in your departure city when leaving from the U.S. to Africa, whether leaving from Atlanta on Delta or from Dulles on SAA. Minimum connecting time in either of those cities should be 2 hours to make sure your bags get put on, but more time is even better.

If you're connecting through Europe to Africa (generally, you should have your head examined if you're doing this) then allow a minimum of 4 hours connecting time in your European city.

The same goes for connecting in Johannesburg to another city, Vic falls for example, make sure to allow plenty of connecting time.

ALWAYS have a carry-on bag with your essentials in it: a couple days worth of clothes, toiletries, and expensive stuff such as binoculars, cameras and laptops. On an expensive DG hunt, I would even plan to get to Africa a day or two early to allow for potentially delayed bags to catch up to me before my hunt starts.

Allowing for an extra day is a good idea. Did that last year and just hung around Bulawayo like a regular tourist for a day. Next day luggage showed up and we went to camp.

this EXACTLY what i have done for the last 5 safaris- no guns, no checked luggage, no hassles- NO WORRIES!!!- and using camp guns i have had no problem killing hippo, crocx2, buff, leopard, sable, and a large assortment of plains game( and i will be using a camp gun- .416 Rigby - on my elephant hunt in Oct.). i just can't see the reason to worry about luggage or be hassled by the airlines about guns. i always travel business or first but have still had luggage not arrive with me- like when i went home for my father's funeral a month ago and my bag containing my suit didn't show! talk about mad!!!

We have made 2 trips to RSA on SAA and had absolutely no problems with them. On our 2011 trip, our luggage was delayed, but not by SAA, the problem was with the United connecting flight.

Hugh, I am so sorry that you missed the most fun of all on your SAA flight! Cool My rifles and baggage hung up in DC due to late arrival because of weather. We boarded with little time to spare and then sat on the tarmac for two hours awaiting our cue for takeoff. I felt all the time we waited that my bags never had time to get loaded and on arrival in Joburg my worst was confirmed. They caught up with me in camp on the third day - missed a very large waterbuck, and nice wildebeeste with loaner rifle, I am just sayin!

A friend of mine flew to Australia two weeks ago with SAA. He slept on a bench at or tambo while he waited the 16 hours for an oil leak to be mended.
