reddy375Travelling to Mozambique with guns
FYI, at the moment SA is not issuing transit gun permits if you are going to Mozambique.
I am personally screwed! Leaving today with my sling shot in hand!

K EvansThat doesn’t sound good, we are headed there in a couple of months. I’ve reached out to a couple of people I know in SA to see what the story is. Hopefully they’ll be able to tell what is going on.

LabmanAre you overnighting in RSA? Just wondering why the transit permit is required. If you can't check your guns all the way to your destination in Mozambique due you need the permit to claim your baggage and guns in RSA then recheck them on the flight to Moz?
You might want to check with one of the permit companies in RSA like Rifle Permits Inc. to see if they could arrange for a pre approved permit.

K EvansI heard back from one of the guys I contacted, he said this was “a little bump in the road” and will be sorted quickly. He has a concession in Moz and had a client arrive yesterday with no problems. I expect at least one more reply hopefully with info from officials.

K EvansI got a reply from another contact in SA and apparently this issue is real, no firearms going from Joburg to Moz, at least for right now. It appears that due to increased ISIS activity in parts of Moz that this measure was put in place. Hopefully, this is very temporary and I'm sure there will be more info forthcoming.
Hi Arjun...when you finish up your hunt I’d love to hear details about RSA->Moz flights, COVID testing availability, and charter availability.
I have a hunt booked in Niassa in October. I was hoping that travel complications would ease by then, but the ‘3rd wave’ in RSA is concerning.
Thanks!

Such stupidity defies comprehension!
ISIS activities?
What has that got to do with a hunter and his personal guns??

I was ready to book a smoking deal in Africa myself but the amount of uncertainty on a number of issues caused me not to pull the trigger. Among them:
1. Flight frequency is not where it was pre-covid, and while cancellations are lower recently, there are still some last minute cancellations.
2. Covid negative test before the flight: my planned hunt was going to take 35 hours of travel and required a negative PCR within 72 hours get avoid quarantine when landing. I spoke with a technician at a test facility that specializes in intl travel and he said while it is quite unusual to test positive if you have had a vaccine, it does sometime happen. He said it seems to happen more with the Pfizer, which is what i received.
3. Unpredictable government events...who knows if a travel ban will be enacted? We have friends in RSA and they advised me not to travel there (my hunt was Zambia and one option is Qatar thru JNB). And who would have thought gun permits would be a problem? (This does seem to be independent of Covid, but WTF?)
4. The requirement to test negative to leave Africa didn't bother me; I figured if I got stuck there all I need is a good internet connection and I can be productive, but that also brings about more uncertainty.
Hunts are supposed to be fun, and half the fun is the anticipation. But not knowing I could get on the plane until the day I flew was a real Debbie Downer.

K EvansThis is a pretty big deal, PHASA, SCI and DSC are all working on it but it’s not looking good for at least the next month, hopefully some sort of compromise can be worked out.

Baker458One more reason on my list titled "Why I won't transit JNB with firearms if there is ANY other option".

jdollarOne more reason why I use camp rifles- go anywhere, anytime with no worries....
