In July of 2015 Lady Margaret and I were driving through the little town of Outjo in Namibia. I pulled over at a little bakery and wandered in for a small snack as I was feeling a mite peckish. Actually have been my entire life. I ordered up some apple/raisin squares (I do not know the scientific name) as I was sure that they would be tasty. My goodness! By the Great Horned Spoon they were beyond fabulous! I felt that they were the best pastries that I have ever eaten anywhere. Any time. Hell, I even gushed about it on AR later that year and several folk knew all about the bakery and agreed with the quality of their creations. One fellow said that the bakery was being demolished . Before I had too much of a chance for great despair someone else said that it was being rebuilt. Bigger and better, don't you know? I am not exactly a stranger to that part of the world although I live in Canada. In September of 2016, driving my rented bakkie, I pulled up to the brand new fancy bakery. Ha! It had been 14 months since my last apple square and I quickly found four big slices. Two for me and two for my buddy languishing in camp a couple of hours away. (My lady, after some medical treatment no longer tastes 'sweets'...) I got her something savoury. I told the server that I had travelled 10,000 miles for this treat! Instead of gobbling them up instantly I got back into the bakkie and drove off to our camp. Met up with my amigo, .. and being very brave, waited until about 7:00 p.m. .. after supper and around the camp fire to take out the treat! It was very good. Some one once said .. that you can't really go back ... Weeks later, on the drive back to Windhoek and the long flights home I stopped once more at that little bakery .. This time I was going to eat the pastry on the spot ... Fresh. In case ... It was Saturday after noon and the bakery was closed.

These types of stories are one of the best things about going to Africa. It is not just the hunting. Seeing and experiencing different ways of lives, customs- the way people do things. It all adds up to a great experience!

The new Bakery is nice, but I still like the Farmhouse better. Outjo is growing up... ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

I live in Chicago, but I'm Facebook friends with the Outjo Bakkery. The apple strudel you describe is the most awesome pastry I've ever tasted. The prices are ridiculously cheap. A close second are the "Pig's Ears" which are a flakey pastry dipped in chocolate. I stop on my way up to camp near Kamanjab and on my way back to the airport in Windhoek. I'll be there this April 2017 on my fourth safari with Sebra Hunting Safaris. Can't wait. Jesus saves, but Moses invests

The main street intersects with a side street where the Bakery is located. On one corner is the Bakery, moving clockwise there is the Puma gas station and then the Farmhouse sits on the third corner. It has small parking lot that faces the main road in front. I agree that the Bakery is fantastic, but as I do not have a sweet tooth, the coffee at the Farmhouse is more appealing to me. They also have great food. And if you make it all the way to Kamanjab, Oppi Koppi has significantly improved their menu and food quality. ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

Of course, I do know Oppi Koppi ... Had schnitzel one night ... hamburgers on another fine evening. Delicious ... And we had the added treat of watching that porcupine and later the genet appearing on that high spot to munch on something. I am not sure how they got them to do that but actually really didn't want to know ... I went there a time or two also to use a cell phone to try and get hold of a PH who eventually showed his lack of sincerity .. (another saga) Next time through I shall dine at the Farmhouse, try some of that coffee (my lady is a huge coffee fan) and then pick up the strudel at the German Bakery (eating some on the spot) and be on my way .. The wild animals may not be waiting for me but nevertheless I will show up again ... just south of Kamanjab ... Photos of the strudel (?) .. I actually have a photo somewhere that I could e mail to someone to put on this thread ...
