I talked my buddy Big Al and his son into going to Namibia with me in August. He is going to bow hunt. Does he need a 4457 for this?

No, you do not...
I did get one for mine (and I do for other items anyway) simply so they don't try and tax me like imbeciles on re-entry. I did that after a bad experience one year coming back through ATL

So, simple answer is No
The other answer is it doesn't hurt to have

If you are flying through Jo'berg SAPS may want to see the sales receipt for your bow. No idea why but they said it was needed on our most recent trip but never asked to see it.

Have been to Africa three times with bows. I did have a 4457 first two trips but not the last trip. I never needed it.

Thanks. No sales receipt is available, so to be safe I'll probably tell him to get the 4457 anyway. I appreciate it.

The wife and I took our crossbows to RSA in 2014. We both took our sale receipts but, never needed them. No problems when I went to Canada last year with my Xbow. My wife was actually contacted Cabela's and they were able to track down her purchase(two years back) and give us a new receipt.

the 4457 is not just for guns. it is proof to US customs upon reentry that you did indeed own items prior to leaving the US and that did not buy them overseas, thus owing duty of them. Normally anything with a serial number is an excuse to get a 4457, but at the price of a bow today I'd list it even if i had to put a number on it. Never know what kind of bunghole you might get as a customs agent

I've taken mine twice and didn't have a 4457 or sales receipt and never was given any guff.

I did take a couple picture of the bow in the hard case with my iphone before I left so I had pics and a date stamp with the location of the picture just in case someone gave me a hard time.

Nobody asked for anything either time.

Anyone been able to find a 4457 that doesn't have an expiration of 02/2016? I've heard that having the expiration date on the form has been causing some hunters problems when they go though Jo'burg.

Actually, it was your posts on that thread that caused me to bring this topic up again.

I'd just white it out and not worry about it, since the expiration date is for the form, not the item on the form. That's what we're gonna do anyway with the bow. Those guys in SA aren't going to know the difference anyway, plus we'll have Africa Sky there anyway to handle everything.

Four bowhunting trips to RSA and never even thought about a 4457 for my bow...never had any questions asked or issues.

If you've taken your guns out of the country before you don't even need a 4457 for them anymore either. (Tongue in cheek)

I came through Washington Dulles (IAD) last week and the Customs and Border protection guy said that he didn't need to see my 4457. He had everything on his computer and just entered my gun's serial number into it and had all the information right in front of him.

I think the primary reason to have the 4457 in your possession is when entering and leaving African countries that require some form of gun permit from your native country.

The CBF 4457's rationale for existence is to prevent Customs agents from charging you import duties on items you purchased in the USA prior to your travels.
