I know, I know, this has/gets hassed out here a lot, but Im asking about it again anyway.

Ive looked at both airline websites Im flying this May/June on my Africa trip (Namibia and Zimbabwe) and I ve read the TSA stuff too.

The question is, IF I get a separate lockable small case to carry my ammo in (under the weight limits of course) has anyone else who has done this and then had the airlines, specifically SAA since it seems they won't let you carry it in the other checked bag ( the rifle case being the other one, and if the ammo box or just the ammo itself won't fit into the rifle case as they allow), has SAA charged a excess baggage fee for that small separate locked ammo box?? I'm sure in the grand scheme of things the cost is pretty small, BUT its another cost and Im simply trying to be sure Im prepared for that and not get riled up when this cost might "sprung" on me.

I'm looking at a couple of options for this ammo box, I saw a nice one made specifially for this purpose while visiting the "Strong Case" booth at DSC show and my local Sportsman's warehouse has a small lockable pistol case that would fit the bill nicely too. When using this ammo case/box, anyone know of any prohibitions of putting other things inside it too if space is there, like maybe a small knife, flashlight, some sun/bug screen etc, to maximise space availability etc.

Anyway, each day gets me clsoer to starting the trip and am slowly getting all the details done for it.

I bought a small lockable Pelican case that held 2 boxes of ammo nicely. I put a small lock on it and placed it inside my Tuffpak with my rifle and everything else. No one anywhere questioned it.

On all my trips so far I have put the ammo boxes, as furnished by Superior Ammunition, into my duffle bag, with no problems either with SAA or pilferage

bison hunter. I did it both ways. On the way over to Tanzania the TSA guy let me transport rifle and ammo in same case, (a hard shell golf case) On the way back they made me seperate the two. I had an unlocked pelican case that held 4 boxes of ammo and put in duffle bag. when i got home and unpacked the rifle I found that I had forgotten another box of ammo that I left in the rifle case.

One thing for sure, it doesn't really matter what the TSA regs or Airline regs say, it's the guy at the counter that makes the rules.

So be prepared to go both ways, ammo with rifle and ammo in seperate ammo box.

a pelican box or otter box is pretty inexpensive.

This box has worked for others on the board
It worked well for us and provides flexibility
it will fit in a tough pack if needed

A rugged lockable case that will keep your ammo protected through your travels. High-impact polymer shell stands up to rough handling, and the dense foam interior compresses around ammo boxes to eliminate shifting and absorb shock. Dual key-locking latches. Carry handle.
Measures: 12.75"L x 5.3"D x 9.3"W.

Suggest a Pelican or Storm case with a padlock as opposed to the built in style lock -- I use a combination style lock - no key to lose. Also – carry all the misc “stuff†from extra reading glasses to flashlights etc –one I use is yellow so I can find the dang thing in my duffle bag – trying to avoid anything black to avoid losing it in my duffle bag when I need something in a hurry.

OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!
