Here’s a little treat- My wife and I are entitled to two checked bags each on the international flight. We are flying United from Minneapolis to Dulles. Even though issued as a single ticket, the “Star Alliance” partnership does not extend to the baggage allowance on the domestic leg. One bag + one guncase = $100 upcharge on United according to their agreement with SAA.

I didn't really rate my several economy flights on SAA ( the Emirates experience is superior ) but the singular thing I admire SAA for is not charging extra baggage fees for firearms which come under their non chargeable sporting goods policy, even though other Star Alliance airlines do. As they apply to Economy travellers the Star Alliance Extra Baggage charges really piss me off. I wouldn't mind so much if the rates were reasonable but they deliberately gouge at the rates they set. ( Are you listening Air New Zealand and Air Canada ? ). On the other hand I think Emirates has a most reasonable baggage policy for Economy passengers. 30 kg baggage allowance regardless of number of pieces within sensible size restrictions. On my first Emirates flights recently I checked in my main bag and firearm case totalling less than 30 kg and was very relieved to not have demands for extra, rip-off baggage fees. Great job Emirates, keep it up ! ( Are you listening Air New Zealand and Air canada ? ) Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.
