Making my fifth trip to Africa in May, this time with my wife. Previous trips were to Zim via Joberg. Going to Thabazimbi area this time for ten days then on to Kruger for about a week. Previous trips I was less than 65 so my medical insurance "traveled", although I always had evac through the safari company. Now we are both 65 and I know Medicare doesn't "travel". Need advice on what you folks in my age bracket do when traveling. I haven't priced travel insurance yet-have used Travel Guard in the past-actually needed to file a claim many years ago when our plane got delayed in Canada on a Caribou hunt-they were great to work with. Am using Travel Guard for an Argentina pigeon shoot in late June because we got cancelled at the last minute by AA a couple of years ago on our way to Bolivia with no other options. Am more concerned about accidents, unexpected illness, etc. than anything else. Thanks for any advice.

Global Rescue is the only way to go. I’m 70 years old, and a one month policy to cover my April/ May 2017 hunt in Namibia, it cost me $270.

I assume are inquiring about medical insurance and not Evac, correct? If Medical, you are going to have to call around and see if anyone still sells short-term medical. If not, thank Obama.

They used to sell a short term heath insurance plan thru their General Agency. It's not a USAA product.

I have Kaiser and can travel anywhere in the world without problems of getting reimbursed as long as you have receipts. I was bit by a rattlesnake it mexico about 5 years ago and they covered $95,000 including the copay

Expensive snake bite!

Good to know, though.

Medical evacuation is terribly expensive, unbelievably so. When you need it you better have it. I have used Global Rescue for years - I buy the annual family policy to cover my wife and I whenever we travel anywhere in the world. I have only had to call them once to help find a MD and Pharmacy in Douala, Cameroon to replace a medication. They helped and provided all needed info.

Going to South Africa? Where the world's first heart transplant was done? A pioneering country in medical research with some of the world's most advanced medicine? And where my guide's entire colon cancer operation cost less than my deductible here in the U.S?

You should be so lucky as to need medical attention there rather than at home. Who wants to be evacuated from a medical mecca where costs are so affordable?

Are you retired military? If so Tricare will cover your overseas medical minus copay.
Global Rescue is still a good idea for medevac as well as advice when something does go wrong. We have an annual plan and actually used it in Canada for info and referral when my wife got food poisoning two months ago. Her Blue cross does not cover outside US and Tricare overseas kicks in whenever your personal or medicare policy does not.
Agree on the South African medical services Dr. visit for tick bite fever and meds $30.00.

Mine was only &75,000 in costs and that was in CA, the land of expensive health care. And remember that foreign med insurance is totally different from medical evac insurance...
