Going to South Africa in May. Fourth safari, first to SA, and taking the wife for the first time. Need to find her some safari clothes, she is a plus size. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My advise would be to not try to buy "safari clothes". Just buy cotton in earth tones. No reason for anyone on safari to look like they came off the pages of the Orvis catalogue.

My advise is to buy some cheap military surplus from Sportsmen Guide, treat it with Permethrin and leave the clothes in Africa.

Mark and Wes both make good points, especially the permethrin. However, women probably have just what they need already. Just wear what they would to watch a parade, go fishing, or go on a picnic or any outdoor activity. And they always want to look cute. I caught my wife putting on lipstick as we were preparing a stalk on an oryx. Just saying.

drj:

As the others have stated (the guys), they were right. As a woman hunter, I tell my women friends just wear what you would wear in the outdoors. If she wants to be a tad bit stylish, shop for shirts and pants with a dark green or green color. No need for special clothes for Africa. Some PH's want you to stay away from khaki or light colored clothing.

Layers of clothing are always the key to staying warm and/or cool. Comfortable, well worn boots or athletic shoes will work.

Twoseventy: I always put on lipstick before a stalk!!! I'm sure it attracks something!

Tell her to take her regular cosmetics. Women are trophies too!

She'll have a fantastic time. PM me if she has particular questions!

Best regards, Darin

i think my wife was with me on 10 trips, and the one thing she fell in love with was the pants that have the legs zip off into shorts. other than that - comfortable is #1

Good call butchloc: Got my daughter pants where the legs zip off, when we went on safari in 2016. Those are still her favorite pants for backpacking, camping, hiking.... pretty much all outdoor use!

Agree with the trousers (pants, our transatlantic cousins tell us, are intimate wear) that can zip the legs off and leave her in shorts. Absolutely key, if more expensive, is that the bottom of the legs have a short zipper to get the leg part over the boots without having to take boots off!

For the more formal stalks, buy her a nice gownless evening strap. She will have many pictures with that garb to remember her trip.

Do make sure they're cotton, no nylon or other performance type fabrics. The laundry staff WILL iron them with a hot iron! Ask me how I know that.

Took my wife to Tanzania for the first time last year. She went crazy over clothes. A 1950's style safari jacket by Boyt, a felt hat, pants from LL Bean, shirts from TAG, Courtney boots, etc. And she wore them all and enjoyed every minute. Let her buy some clothes, but the boots are the most important.

My wife told me that 5.11 had "tactical" womens clothes now, and asked me if I thought she should get some.

I dunno... kinda like the Orvis look. They make great gear and give back to conservation.

Stay with soft, pure cotton (Oakbay makes the best wearing stuff, available from the Safari-Outdoors gun shops in SA).

If your lady will walk and stalk with you ensure that neither yours nor hers make loud swishing noises against the winter grass and twigs. (sorry, I see this is your 4th safari, so my advice was unnecessary).

Most of all - enjoy it all!
