I have a backpack that I will use for my carry on, does anyone know if it is permissable to ALSO carry a separate laptop computer bag? FYI, Flying Delta Thanks

Should be able to, I know flying domestically they allow one carry on and a briefcase or laptop case. I guess the same applies for international flights. Good Hunting,

David is correct. You're allowed to carry on 2 bags. Cody Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

However, the airline will call it "One carry on, and one personal Item"

Is that true for Heathrow too? Saw a lot of folks told they could not go through the security point between terminals unless they went out and checked their second carry on item or consolidated them. This was a while back though. Not a good thing if you are not planning to enter the UK and just wanted to get to your connecting flight. Maybe it changed in the last few years or was just temporary. ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

On Delta you are allowed one carry-on which is supposed to fit into a size-wise measuring unit that is 9" x 14" 22". In addition you are also allowed to carry on one personal item such as a laptop case, camera case, etc. If your carry-on is fatter than 9" then just make sure you can squish it to fit into the sizewise unit so it will fit in the overhead or under the seat in front of you. Just one more tip - it's best to put all of your highly valuable items, such as cameras, laptops, binoculars, jewelry, or other expensive electronic devices in your carry-on bag so that they are with you at all times. Airlines do not cover the loss or damage of these type items in checked luggage if your bag is lost or damaged.

I called SAA last Sept and asked this very question about a backpack and a briefcase . The answer was yes, a carry-on and a personal item were OK but to make sure that the personal item can fit under the seat. Call your airline and verify if you want to be absolutely sure - and maybe print the info from their web site and take that along as well. "Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult."

Excellent suggestion. Here is how the information appears on Delta's website. Carry-on Baggage Our goal is to provide you with a comfortable and seamless travel experience. To improve onboard efficiency, we ask that you follow our carry-on baggage policy as outlined below. You may carry on one bag and one personal item at no charge. Please note that all items must easily fit into the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. Approved Personal Carry-on Items 1 purse, briefcase, camera bag, or diaper bag; or 1 laptop computer (computers cannot be checked and must be carried on); or 1 item of a similar or smaller size to those listed above. Additional Approved Carry-on Items You may also carry on the following items, which do not count as personal items: A jacket or umbrella. Food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint. Duty free merchandise. Special items like strollers, child restraint seats, or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches. Carry-on Baggage Size Restrictions When oversized bags do not fit in the overhead bins, delays occur. Fees will be applied to the oversized bag if it has to be checked at the gate. To avoid delays as well as fees, follow these size requirements: Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 115 cm) in combined length, width, and height. Baggage must fit easily in the Carry-on Baggage Check, which is located near the check-in counters and at the gate and is approximately 22" x 14" x 9" or 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters.

Checked this at the BAA Airport website and they now state the following : How many bags? If your airline allows it, you may take more than one item of hand baggage through security control at Heathrow. However, please check with your airline, as some operate additional limits. They did limit the number of carryon bags to just one - appears they now permit you to carry the allowed limit set by the airline you are traveling!

In this case, your laptop is the personal item and your backpack is your carry-on. Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

You might wish to check on your airline. I have seen notices stating that ONE bag is allowed for economy class passengers. And TWO are allowed for business and first class passengers.

FWIW, I usually take a flight bag similar to this: http://www.marvgolden.com/flig...s/purdyneatsplit.htm with all my binos, GPS and other safe but valuable items etc in and an empty backpack in the top of it and then once through passport control I take the empty backpack out and use it for duty free etc. Things like expensive knives etc go in my rifle case and the rest goes into a soft bag with padlocks that I then have shrink wrapped. Saeed is dead right that you need to check with the individual airline for number of bags they allow without extra payment. A lot of the British (budget) airlines now hit you with big charges for extra cases or in some instances, any cases at all. A lot of passengers who fly with those airlines are now taking to using those clever jackets/waistcoats with umpteen monster pockets in so they can 'wear' all their luggage and thus escape the additional charges. I flew on Qatar airways last week. They definitely said a 7Kgs bag for economy, and 2 7 Kg bags for business and first class. I asked a passenger standing next to me if his bag was 7Kgs after showing him the sign. He laughed, looked around, and pointed to a couple who looked to be at least twice his size, and 3 times mine! I know my carry on weighed about 14Kgs. I said to him "if they ask about our bags we might have to bring this to their attention" No one asked. A couple of years ago we were taking quite a bit of stuff to Tanzania, and we were 3 passengers. Our total was 280 Kgs! The check in lady asked what we had in the bags, which started Walter off as usual "We are going hunting, so we are taking lots of canned food. Because he is not a very good hunter. So if we did not have any canned food we would starve to death" She answered him "Are you a good hunter?" Luckily a supervisor arrived and told her to let us through. I told Walter "would keep your bloody mouth shut?" Walter "why should I? You said we are to have fun. And I am having fun at your expense. Because in the camp you and your friends are always against me" i really have no idea why I keep putting up with him.

This year in both Capetown and Jo-berg after checking our bags and moving down the line we came to a gent with a portable scale that weighed our carryon bags and told some of us they were too heavy. We done some repacking and was able to proceed. one of us had to go back and check her carryon. Flying out of Uppinton SA we had to pay a sur-charge on each firearm.

Larry, I assume the scale was in the line at the counter? My carry on for tomorrow weighs probably 50 lbs though it is a standard rollerboard. I will just be connecting in Jburg, so I won't have to go to a counter. I am guessing they won't weigh them in the gate area? It was after the counter, but before the gate area. When we got the bags to his satisfaction he attached a label that said the bag had been checked. In Capetown we used the porters and that was money well spent as they took us around the long lines and got us cleared.
