Unfortunately, due to a health issue, I was forced to postpone my March hunt at the Gras Ranch. The good news is that I hope to hunt there for two weeks next March plus spend two weeks sightseeing.

Although I'm not much of a fisherman, I find the thought of fishing for tigerfish and maybe doing some surf fishing very appealing.

Can anyone offer some suggestions of things to do and see. My wife and a couple friend of ours will be with me for the sighseeing portion. Is renting a car out of Windhoek the way to go?

Bobby,

I just booked two tickets for my wife and I for this September and we will be renting a car and doing a little self touring. Shoot me your email address and I will forward to you what information I have found, what others have shared with me and what I uncover as I put this trip together.

Hey Bobby, there is no tiger fishing in Namibia that I'm aware of....you'd have to go to Botswana to get in on that. There is some surf fishing around Swakopmund though. There is a cheesy camel farm at Swakop that offers camel rides that is a must do as well. It's great for a laugh and really cheap.

Etosha is an absolute must. Plan on at least two or three days. Swakopmund is kind of touristy and worth the trip and the dunes at Sossusvlei are worth seeing. We enjoyed seeing the White Lady rock paitings as well.

Give yourself lots of time to get around. The roads are extremely rough, with few being paved. We bit off a bit more than we should have and tried to do everything in a week. Be sure to make all your accommodation reservations in advance.

Renting a car is a great option but remember they drive on the wrong damn side of the road there....lol

When I hunted Namibia a few years ago, my PH, Danie Jansen van Vuuren and I talked about just such a fishing trip. You might drop him an email. His email address is orpheus@mweb.com.na
Tell him Dan Arbegast gave you his name. He does a bit of fishing over by Swakopmundland and we talked of tiger fishing up by Botswanna. I think he could put something together. He and his wife Carina are good people.

Check out... http://caprivihouseboatsafaris.blogspot.com/

We stayed there last year and they do fishing trips down the Zambezi and into the Chobe.

The area around the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe at Kasane is a wonderful place to see.

The key surf fishing area is Henties Bay that is north of Swakopmund and south of the seal colonies. Good surf casting for various edible fish such as kabeljou and steenbras as well as the occasional galyun, as well as the shark known as bronzies (sp?). Some nice places to stay including Byseewah Lodge that I've been to and a good restaurant or two.

Regards

We did your trip last June. Several nice B&B's to choose from in Namibia. Etoshia for at least 2 days. At least 2 days to see and do Windhoek. And fishing for 1 or 2 days on coast. I am entertaining the idea of coming to Namibia just to do the turist thing and not even bring a rifle, I had that much fun.

You can borrow money, but you can't borrow time. Don't wait, go now.

Ditto Brain 1 - I have hunted Namibia twice and spent 9 days sightseeing as well on the first trip. The PH I hunted with used to be a professional travel guide and I have discussed with him the possibilities of just loading up some gear, food and such and head out for parts unknown. I would like to spend some time in the Caprivi area, as well as have a go at finding the Desert Elephants. Wild Horses, surf fishing etc. Namibia is really a cool place and really fell in love with it.

I personally would not do a self drive as when I was there a couple got lost and died from exposure. There are a lot of unmarked roads, roads that are not in real good shape and without some "guideance would not feel comfortable going it on my own. Besides one could spend more time actually seeing and doing the things you want to do rather than being lost, and ignorant of the surroundings with a local along. JMHO. Anyway you go it should be a really great trip.

Surf fishing: http://www.molaangling.com/

Terence Clark treated us right, and was good with my step-kids.

Whale vertebrate the kids found (I SO wanted to smuggle this back in my suitcase!)

Jeremy with a "kab" - Terence cleaned the fish for us and the hotel prepared it for our dinner - absolutely delicious!

To each his own, but I really enjoyed Etosha for about 4 hours and then I, personally, wanted to go on to something else. OTOH, if you're really into wildlife photography the waterholes offer a continuing range of possibilities that could consume days.

Contrary to the above post, we traveled fairly extensively in the N half of Namibia and I found the roads to be anywhere from fair to excellent.
