Emirates to Harare via Lusaka Instead of Jo'burg

We are going to Zim later this year to hunt buffalo with CMS.

I was just checking for flights, and found that Emirates can get us to Harare by transiting Lusaka instead of Jo'burg, which I consider a huge plus.

There is an overnight in Dubai, which I also like, as it breaks up the trip and permits a night's sleep between flights.

Has anyone flown this route? How was transiting Lusaka with firearms? Can you simply check them straight through? I'm assuming so, since Emirates flies both legs, from Dubai to Lusaka, and Lusaka to Harare.

Thanks.

I did this route in 2018, also for hunting with CMS.
Emirates checked luggage, including firearms, through to Harare although in my case the flight originated in Auckland, New Zealand and all baggage was checked through from there and I did not overnight in Dubai. When we landed at Lusaka only those passengers disembarking there actually got off the plane. Everybody else stayed aboard ( thus avoiding any "transit" process ) and we were on the ground for maybe 1 1/2 hours before taking off again for Harare. Everything went very smoothly and all my luggage arrived safely. It's a great route option I hope to do again someday. Avoiding Jo'burg is a big plus to me too.

Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

I flew that same route this past April. It went great and the stop in Dubai was nice change. Nice to sleep in a bed.
Emirates has a hotel off site that would be free to you. Because of Covid, i elected to stay at the airport hotel. It was easier and not a lot of money. I believe the night we spent in Harare was more money

No problems with guns.

I will fly the same route when i return

Did the Emirates flight in 2019.
Direct flight San Francisco to Dubai. Overnight in Dubai . Next morning Dubai to Lusaka (approx. 1 hour layover Lusaka and did not deplane) then on to Harare.
We checked guns/baggage Emirates at SanFrancisco straight through to Harare. We checked in with Emirates at Dubai in the morning prior to flight to Harare to make sure our rifles were going to be on our flight. Paper work was checked extensively but no issues.

I’ve done that route 3-4 times (and would’ve done it last year but Emirates wasn’t flying into Harare at that time). We usually opt for the longer layover in Dubai and have stayed at the off airport property each time. Really breaks up the long flight and gives an opportunity to explore Dubai a bit. No worries with firearms, if your firearm isn’t on the plane they won’t let you board. As another said, we didn’t deplane in Lusaka.

Because Qatar is a One World partner, I booked 3 tickets DFW to Harare with Gracy on them last week for a trip in September. They do DFW-Doha-Harare, allowing us to circumvent JoBurg, which was definitely a plus.

Steve sent my daughter and I on that route last May for a hunt with SSG. Was a nice way to go, avoid JNB is always good. We did the overnight in the airport hotel in Dubai to avoid "breaking transit", although in hindsight, I don't think anyone at HRE had any idea whether we left the airport or not.

I would really like to do a multi-day stay in Dubai on the way to/from Africa once all this "covid theater" testing stuff is over.

I am also hunting Buffalo with CMS later this year. I fly on the 19th August and plan to fly with Emirates via Lusaka. I believe all Emirates flights to Zimbabwe are currently suspended, that's the latest info on the Emirates website.

I flew this route in 2019 when I went to Royal Kafue albeit without a rifle and from Birmingham, UK. You will stay on the plane when you land in Lusaka. You should be able to check your rifle all the way through.

With kind regards
Mike

I think you will be more than satisfied with this route.

I flew this route last August to go and hunt with CMS. I spent the night in Dubai and it was nice to stretch my legs and have a nice meal and then get back to the hotel Emirates provided the voucher for. I was fresh when I arrived at Harare the next day.

There is not transiting per se at Lusaka.. Your luggage, ammo and guns are checked into Harare. Lusaka is a stopover where if you are ticketed to Harare you do not even get out of the plane. Same on the return.

I am about to book the same flight for this coming July.
