I've heard that any of the airlines associated with Star Alliance have changed the rules regarding the size of rifle case they will fly out of Joburg. Has anyone had troubles in the past month or so? I don't mind paying extra but I won't ship my rifles freight. Any recent experience?

They won't let you ship them by freight anyway as they need to travel with you as checked baggage but you need to check your tickets to see which airline you're travelling with and then look on their website to see what size restrictions etc are in place.

I've done all that and they have greatly reduced the size of rifle case they'll take to the point where a double case won't conform but what isn't clear is what they do if it's oversized. I know some have just had to pay a fee and others had a real hassle. Just wondering if anyone had flown out of Joburg in the past month or so on a Star Alliance carrier.

In that case, why not just email customer services in your home country and ask them for definitive advice and then comply with it and take a hard copy of their reply with you when you travel.

Well you can solve this problem easy
Buy a Blaser and a WalMart Action Packer
Never carry a gun case again.
Try it you will like it.
Have done it for 14 trips over

Phoned and emailed...still waiting. Just trying to see if anyone had any first hand experience in the past month when this new regulation came in.

LOL...it's kind of like driving a Chevy...I don't mind when other people do it but I can't see myself behind the wheel of one....lol

From what I can find out if you are transitioning from another flight that lets you, it is not a problem. Got this from my travel agent and off SAA website.
