Just packing up my gear for an elephant hunt in a few weeks in the Caprivi. Just wondering if I should treat my clothing with deet before I leave in addition to bringing a bottle of bug repellent along. Are the insects bad? or not so much. Just wondering what other people have experienced in that part of the world? Thanks "Conservation through Hunting"

I have not found insects to be much of a problem in the Caprivi. I have not had to use any DEET solution on my skin when hunting there. But then again I always spray my clothes and boots with a diluted Permethrin solution before leaving home. I also bring the stuff along for a refresher spray once or twice during the safari. Seems to work pretty well. Good luck! Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Thanks. I will look up Permethrin. Hearing that name reminded me that I have used it previously on a trip to Peru. I remember it have a distinct odor though. "Conservation through Hunting"

I bought a couple of bottles of the stuff from Cabela's (I think) several years ago. It is a concentrated solution. The stuff is so strong that I am still on the first bottle. The directions call for mixing it with water so that it is diluted, but I can't remember the proportions. In any case, the directions are on the bottle. It does have a noticeable odor initially, but it doesn't last. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Edholum- If you have a Wal-Mart, look for Repel with Permanone in the sporting goods section. It contains .05% Permthirin in a spray can. I have used it in a pretty bad area of MOZ. My two sets of clothes were washes 5 times each and I did not notice the effects were lessened. Good luck on your trip.
