Need advice on which type of transportation to take into Windhoek.
Hopefully, one day in the next 2 years, I will get to hunt Namibia.
Would like to spend a day or two in Windhoek before the hunt to take in the sites and Joe's Beer House. (Joe's is a must)
Which Taxi company should I hire at the airport?
Which Taxi company should I stay away from?
I see on some posts, you are advised to stay away from Taxis that have no company logo.
Are there any Shuttle Services?
Do any hotels provide Shuttle Service?

Thanks for any info.

I've always had someone pick me up, be it my ph/outfitter or representative from the rental car company. I would suggest getting advice/arrangements from the hotel you choose to stay at, but I can't imagine your PH/outfitter not being able to arrange this even if you are to spend a few extra days in Windhoek.

In Africa, things change quickly.

I suggest that you wait until 14 days before your departure date to ask these questions of your hotel.

They will have the most current information.

I would ask my ph for a recommendation. Plus, you are going to need to arrange storage for your weapon if you bring your own.You may want to ask your host to show you a few sites on your first day and then catch anything else on your departure day.

Where ever you lodge will arrange this for you if you let them know your needs. I have stayed at Ongonga several times and I believe the cab company they use is called Paradise. Nice folks and very timely. Windhoek is really a nice town to spend a day or two in.

George is absolutely correct. I used an outfit called Leopard, if I recall, the first time I went to Windhoek. Joseph, the driver was excellent; came back and ferried me around after the hunt. Next time, not so much and Joseph was no longer there. Doubt they are in business anymore and I have no idea how to contact Joseph directly.

Check with your outfitter or where you are staying. They will know and should be able to arrange a pickup and good transport.

As others have said your PH is the right contact for this information. If you have a good PH he should make sure you are picked up and taken to a good/safe place to spend time prior to him picking you up for the hunt. These guys know the ropes, or should, so find out before hand just what they have in mind. Good hunting, Namibia is a great Country.

Rent a car from the airport, I did, spent 5 days driving around and seeing the sights and spending time in Windhoek. Just got tired of people honking their horns at me when I made my turns and almost always ended up on the wrong side of the road. I mastered it after 2 days...LOL
Even the guys at the checkpoints with the AK's are pretty nice, never had a problem.

This would be my recommendation also. I have some clients going to Namibia for ele in Oct and the PH will handle touring and hunting himself from pick up at the airport to drop off at hunt's end. For me this is the very best way to handle this.

I always stay at the Kalahari Sands Hotel. We usually spend a couple of days in Windhoek so we can go to Rosenthal's, Joes Beer House and the Native craft center plus the shops near and in the hotel, great safari clothes shop. The hotel or your PH will arrange transport from/to the airport. If you have trouble let me know as I have friends in Windhoek that can help....Tom

If your outfitter charges AT ALL for a road charter to the hunting area (and if you are hunting for anything more than 8-10 days or interested in touring a bit) it is 100% worth it to rent a car in Namibia.

For us, we rented a car at the airport (restricted miles and a $1000 credit card pre-authorization for any potential damage). Our outfitter charges $450 or so for a RT road charter to the hunting area and I think we paid about $250-300 for 14 days of car rental. It was worth it to just let the car sit for the duration of our hunt so we could drive up to the hunt area by ourselves at the beginning of our trip and then tour Etosha (and visit Joe's) on our own post-hunt. By having the car sit idle during our hunt, we essentially banked the restricted miles that we would use after the hunt to tour around a bit. Afterward, we cleaned and washed the car before returning it with no damage and had no problem getting the rental car company cancel our credit card pre-authorization for the vehicle deposit. Namibia is a fabulous destination for many reasons but the combination of truly wild places and great infrastructure making it "foreigner friendly" is certainly one of them!

We stay at the Airport Lodge which is conveniently placed between the airport and Windhoek proper. It is rustic but comfortable and reasonably priced.

Hi Mauser K98, there is an Airport Schuttel into town. Then you can try Omahuka Transfers
tel 00264 61 226195. They are good and reliable.
I think they have an internet page too under the name. The owners name is Mario. Which hotel will you be staying at? I know some do arrange transport.
Mario will take you to your hotel and will welcome you at the airport. I believe in organizing well in at vance and then check in 2 weeks prior to landing and again a day prior landing.
The guys you can rely on in Windhoek are booked well in advance and it is best to book.
Good luck and let us know if you need more info.
Enjoy Namibia
