OK, the guns are sighted in, ammo is loaded and in a lockable case. Clothing is selected and set aside. Airtravel for the 22nd is booked and the good folks at Afton Place have my license in hand.

Now to the important items, to me this is a vacation and I'll probably take a taste of something to soothe the old muscles in the evening. Ever try to find decent tequila in Africa?

What are the present rules in regards to packing a bottle of Jalisco sunshine in my checked luggage?

I have traveled with a good Single Malt in its original bottle in its original tube, and I have used backpacker type bottles to carry the Angels nectar as well with out any problems.
In checked baggage.

However Joberg Airport has a pretty good duty free liquor store.

I do not know about that cactus squeezed stuff, but they have a pretty good selection of the Single Malt.

My experience has been to buy in the duty free shops in the airports upon arrival. You don't have to schlep the bottles as far and you'll find some pretty good stuff you don't see here in the states. Joberg has some tequila I've not seen here in the Southwest, clear as any gin.

just remember that it has to go in you luggage, 3 oz is all you can take on carry on. usually your outfitter who is picking you up at the airport is more than happy to drive you by a liquor store somewhere

Ok, you guys have talked me into trying the duty free shop. Any bets as to finding a bottle of Patron?

OK ... the Duty Free store in Joberg is good.

Does RSA allow you to carry-on a bottle for another flight within country? We're going to Phalaborwha the next morning.

glad I do not drink chances of getting a bottle there intact are not good!

I never find what I want in duty free shops. Wrap your bottle in bubble wrap, find a bottle sized zip-lock bag (in case the unthinkable happens) and know you have what you want when you get there. You may even have the pleasure of offering your PH something he hasn't tried before.

I am always glad to find another Takillya drinker.

I've always asked my PH to have a bottle or two (depending on the length of safari) on hand and it doesn't seem to be a big problem for them. While I drink the good stuff OTR at home, I generally mix with tonic or ginger on safari, as the quality is not on par with Don Julio or La Familia.

I've seen Agave fields in RSA and I believe they produce their own.

I don't know whether to be amused or apalled.

The only vitamin T they had at the duty free in Atlanta the last time I went to RSA was Sauza.

The manager of our local Mexican resturant introduced me to Hacienda Vieja (sp?)or rather one of his waiters did as he speaks very little English. It's cheap enough to chance with the luggage gorillas and smooth enough to sip. I may just give it a try. Bubble wrap, ziplock bags, cardboard tubing and all....

Surprisingly enough, their stuff wasn't hateful. I was actually OK with it.
But then again, tonic or ginger does cut it well.

We can never find Glenlivit in Africa so bring our own never had a breakage yet. Wrap with sweater and put into rifle soft case Put the bottle into a waterproof bag before wrapping with clothing

Travelling through Franfurt to Windhoek this year. Anyone know how the duty free options are at either of these airports? Will be arriving in Windhoek on Sunday morning. Should I expect them to be open for business?

The liquor selection at Frankfurt is very good.

Do not buy anything at the Duty-Free shop in Windhoek on the way back. You won't be able to get it through security at the gate. Don't ask how I know.

I have always been able to get Laphroaig at Joberg duty free.

Never any problems getting it on the plane or into Zim.

But I still carry "some" in the camping style bottles designed for liquor.

Liquor bottles are pretty resistant to breakage, especially if very well packed. However, if one is brokend despite the best packing efforts (TSA has been known to "rearrange" one's careful packing), a plastic ziploc bag isn't of much help because the glass shards will quickly cut through it.

I'm a Canadian drinker. Although it is not my first choice, Seagrams V.O. will do fine in the bush and it is available in a plastic bottle. Look for something that is bottled in plastic for "traveling medicine".

Has anybody noticed whether you can get Ardbeg malt whisky at JB airport duty free?

Also, can we still buy duty-free stuff at Melbourne or Perth airport and take it O/S, say to Africa, without being charged excess baggage?

I spent some time looking around the duty free in Frankfurt and there wasn't a single thing there that I couldn't buy at home for less.

Well, I decided to take potluck and buy in country. One of the employees at the lodge picked up a bottle of Bombay Saphire for less than I'd have paid at home.

On the return trip I picked up a box with two liter bottles of Amarula cheaper than a fifth costs at home. My wife picked up a bottle of wine as a present. The duty free in Jo'berg sealed those in large plastic bags and they went on as carry on luggage to Dulles. Once we got thru customs we had to repack them into our checked luggage and pray they made it to Philly intact. Thankfully they did.

All's well that ends well.

Sorry, but the first thing that popped into my mid was "....But getting OFF the plane was a different story!"

I carry some in my checked baggage in the camping style bottles so I have some at the Afton House, I always stay there 2 days.

I then buy 2 bottles of Laphroaig at Joberg duty free, it is a very big liquor store, and take them on the plane in my carry on.
No problems getting them into Zimbabwe.

I do not think they will let you drink your on Liquor on the plane, but I never tried.

i don't think you can do the carry on thing anymore with the 3 oz limit on liquids. we couldn't even buy a bottle or 2 of peri peri at the peri peri store in the airport last trip cause it would have been to much liquid on carry on, & baggage was already checked through

If you buy something inside the secure area of the airport such as the duty free shop you can carry it on board.

Three weeks ago they had set up a check point inside the jetway about fifty feet from the door of the airplane and were checking all carry on bags for "liquids". They were removing soft drinks, bottled water and anything else in containers from people's cary on bags.

Things change and this may have as well. I have done it through Dulles and Jo'burg - the last time a year ago - and within the US many times. Just like the many changes in carrying ammo into and out of SA this may have changed as well. Or ... some locals may have just wanted free booze!

Yes, they are checking inside the jetway for liquids in carry-on luggage. However, duty free liqour in the sealed plastic bag is no problem. As long as you leave it in the wrapper they provide at the duty free store, you will get through Jo'berg just fine.

As was earlier mentioned, once back in the US (Atlanta, Dulles, etc.) you have to pack the bottles in your checked luggage before any connecting flight. It worked well for me this week.

I had a problem in Frankfurt with Amarula that I had purchased in Windhoek. They confiscated it at the internal security because it wasn't purchased in Europe. Had I bought it in Frankfurt, it would have been fine.
