So, I've just been reading the African info forum threads and noted that a copy of your return ticket is required when entering SA with a firearm and ammunition. In this day of electronic tickets, is the letter ticket you print out good enough? Also, has anyone determined since that 2006 thread whether it is okay to carry ammunition in your hard case WITHOUT it being in some kind of special wood or metal box?

From what I've read (on here) lately, SAA requires ammunition to be locked in a hard sided container not in the gun case. A print out of your itinerary fullfills the return ticket requirement. Plastic ammo cases are fine. I picked one up with little flanges where you can apply a small padlock. It should be in your luggage not your guncase.
