I have not traveled to Africa for a few years and never to Argentina. I am planning on going to one of the two the first half of year. I have heard different stories that my current 4457's are no good. Would someone that knows the exact requirement please inform me? I was under impression that 4457's are good indefinitely if the item on there matches what you are travelling with. This issue is not so much the 4457 being good for its intended purpose. The 4457 is good for life for its intended purpose which is to document that you possessed the item before you left the USA. The problem is that many gov't printed forms put down on the bottom "exp. 2017" or text to that effect as a reminder to the department who owns that form (Customs in this case) to review the form before say 2017 to see if they want to update the for itself. The geniuses in African countries have interpreted that as the 4457 expiring and no amount of logic or common sense will convince them otherwise. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Very good advice here. Depending on your outfitter in Argentina, they should have reliable Beretta and Benelli guns to suit your needs. My guys also have great rifles from .30-06 to .458 custom guns if big game hunting. I don’t want that to sound like a plug, but I won’t take my guns to Argentina. There is a hassle with paperwork and it’s always changing. Also, why shoot thousands of rounds through your shotgun per day? I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills. Marcus Cady DRSS

I hear the shotgun part but might be doing a combo Red Stag/ Wing shoot. Really don't like using other rifles. Shotguns more palatable, like you said running a bunch of rounds through it is wear and tear you could prevent plus the travel piece. I went to Botswana last year. For traveling through RSA, the agent at Worldwide Trophy Adventures suggested that I get a NEW 4457, because RSA wants to see the current year stamped on the form. Apparently, some of them treat it like a 'gun permit' from the US. So I got a new form. TSA agent could not comprehend why I was updating the same damn form, but did it anyway & stamped it. They MADE ME BRING MY RIFLES IN TO THE CUSTOMS OFFICE AGAIN, which I could not comprehend since the serial numbers were the same as on the existing form. What a total pain & waste of time. I wonder what percent of my waking hours will be spent 'jumping through hoops' a decade from now...

1. For Africa, book with Kathi Klimes (Wildtravel.net) and she will take care of you regarding firearms. 2. I am a 28 gauge shooter and have been to Argentina > 8 times. Rented guns twice, both times (great outfitters) they were all POS. I won't go if I can't take my own shotgun. Yes, it is a PIA. But, if you do your homework and use a reliable travel agent you can minimize (not eliminate) problems. FWIW I am a Browning guy, and if your shotgun can't handle the volume of rounds that you go through in South America get a new shotgun. Just my $.02. Each country is different. South Africa is not every country in Africa. Best to avoid RSA/JNB anyway. It's declined badly and going to be an even bigger mess going forward. Very good advice. While we do have some problems with the A400 (20 and 28), there is always one available at your stand for replacement. What’s amazin is that a $1,500 gun (almost $3,000 there) will fail with a $12 plastic part that slides over the magazine tube. We also had a guy bring a matched pair of recent manufacture H&H O/Us that needed some field gunsmithing. Another client that needs like a 16” or so LOP 12ga and only cares about pigeons and ducks decided to have us buy a Browning just like his to leave in camp after LAN/LATAM and Chile changed the rules mid flight even for transiting hunters. He said for get bringing my own guns again and forget LATAM and tore up his tickets and went through BsAs. In short, the rules and regs are very fluid and more of a pain than they should be. I had hoped President Macri’s administration would’ve made them easier, but they are still cleaning up so much mess. Good luck with your hunt and please post a report! I won't go if I can't take my primary firearms. I'll borrow a .22 if it is called for but my primary guns are not-negotiable. I practice, load, and carry them and I'm most comfortable with them. It is part of the hunt. Argentina was a PITA but patience won out.

I went in 2009 and it didn't seem to be a big deal to take a Browning OU. Everyone in our party took a gun I believe. I don't think I would shoot the outfitter's guns myself but lot's of people do. I took a file to my Browning after 8500 rounds in Argentina to loosen it up a bit so it wasn't so hard to open and close. Should have done it before the trip so my arm didn't get so sore.
