Weight limits to/from RSA???

mstarlingWeight limits to/from RSA???
Guys,
Taking NWA/KLM to RSA in late May and SAA back. NWA indicates a 70 pound International weight limit unless more limited by other carriers. Looks like SAA has a 50 pound limit.
Anyone see the 50 pound limit enforced?
Looks like any reasonable gun case is gonna get an extra size charge too.

Oh yes--50 lbs is enforced big time SAA! They check weights before you can even get in line to check in at J'burg! Get ready to pay, have your credit card handy! You won't get by with even a pound over!

I just returned Saturday from Jberg. They did waeigh all of our luggage, but together, not each bag! For my wife and I they had us put all 4 bags on the scales, wrote the wt in kg on a piece of paper and handed it to me, telling me to show it to person at the window when checking in. Appeared that as long as our total for 4 bags was under 200 lbs, they were happy. Seems odd as all American airlines I have dealt with want to weigh each bag an enfore a 50 lb per bag limit. But, I didn't argue as I removed my bags, one of which was probably over the limit!

N E 450 No2This has been my experience. If you have 2 bags that weigh 51 lbs they can and will charge you for both bags being overweight, So it is better to have only one bag overweight if you need to carry that much stuff.
Also they might ever refuse to transport any single bag that weighs over 70 lbs [ask me how I know

robncoloradoMstarling- You can get by quite easily with less than 50 lbs, just take about 1/2 the clothes you think you will need. It seems after each trip over there, i take less and less each time...makes life alot easier. Good Luck.

collectorReturned thursday May 14th from Joberg on SAA.
It helps if you know the conversion factors between Kilograms and Pounds since in USA they can penalize you if an individual piece is over 50 pounds.
On the other hand they can penalize you in South Africa if the combined weight of two checked in pieces is over 45 Kilograms.They weighed our 4 check-in bags together and gave us a slip (2 passengers). For the two of us it was 81 Kilograms. I believe we would have been ok to about 90 KGs without being penalized.
We gave away a lot of things to the lodge staff before we left.

(weight in pounds) = (weight in kg)*2.204
100 pounds = 45.37 kg

Unless you are an elite member of NW/DL frequent flyer program or flying in business class then their baggage allowance is 50lbs per bag as well.

Blair338/378SAA/QANTAS from Oz to Joburg is 20kgs total.
I paid $631 in excess weight from Sydney to Windhoek, last year. $400 or so on return.
It's the price of taking your own rifles......

Final weights on our luggage are 40# for the SKB double gun case with two rifles in soft cases and three jackets for padding, 42# for a US military dufflebag with both my wife's and my clothes, some gear and the ammo box.
I believe we'll be OK.
I was kidding my wife that we could check a case of Troeg's beer as a second bag.

Millwall PaulWe flew with SAA from Heathrow to Joberg in 2007 there were 4 of us and our bags were 10 kg over in total - we were hit with a bill of £332 which was 1 way only! made a hell of a start to an otherwise great holiday.
