With United cancellation on trips till June 3, being offered Lufthansa option on the out bound portion. While not the preferred routing I am considering this routing to JNB but am very concerned about the Lufthansa baggage rules for firearms.

Sports weapons:
1 weapon in one item of baggage
1 item of baggage with ammunition
Maximum number of baggage items: 2

Does anyone have any experience with Lufthansa and have carried more than one firearm in the same case through Frankfurt on to Africa?

United code shares with Turkish airlines as both are a member of "Star Alliance". Might look into that as THY does NOT have similar restrictions as Lufthansa in regards to number of firearms in luggage.

I normally would have gone Emirates however Untied had a great deal and now has cancelled the outbound portion only offering Lufthansa as the alternative. Will try and see if they will offer the Turkish option.

I have used them about 4 years ago.

No issues in practice with the number of firearms in a case (I had 2 in one case) or baggage handling.

HOWEVER - as you will no doubt be routing through Frankfurt you need to be aware that - 1. they will sting you for (from memory) €60 per firearm either way 2. They need to be checked by the Polizie. 3. If you are changing terminals you will need at least 3 hours to do this - due to time taken to deliver the guns at the carousel and getting the police mobilised.

Of course as these things are wont to do this may well all have changed in the interim - and given current events you may well have other issues......

I convinced United to route me through Zurich and hopefully the return remains the same JNB through EWR. If not its off to Emirates or pay Delta their costs.

.

Check the LH website - long haul flights weapons fee now something like EUR 225/- per trip. Then they have rates for domestic Germany and Europe. Charge by the case and not the number of weapons. I will not fly LH ever again with firearms due to the costs of handling that they levy. Robbery!
