I was asked today if one can bring ammo into Namibia via Frankfurst without having a gun to go with it? Any thoughts or experiance? Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

No, We had guns, but the Ammo was in our Suitecases. I never have had my ammo looked at anywhere. However we used to be able to put our Rifle Scopes in our carry on bags. Not allowed anymore. Hard to say what the next thing is that won't be allowed.

NAPHA web page might be of some help. The gun check is before the luggage carousel and no one asked about it, as I recall. Robert If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretense of taking care of them, they must become happy. Thomas Jefferson, 1802

I'm not sure of legality, but if you're going via Frankfurt I would do it if I wanted to use my ammo or carry some to my PH. I think your chances of getting caught in Namibia are slim and none. I would pack it just as recommended in a separate case, no more than 5 Ks,etc. OTOH if you're going via Jo'berg, I wouldn't consider it. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

My advice is NOT to do it. When you are travelling with firearms, they have you in the system. If you are not, and they do find it in your bags, I think you will have some explaing to do. If you are flying directly to your country of destination, it might be workable.

Saeed is, as usual 100% on top of this. Flying with ammunition but without a firearm is purely based on the consent (good-will) of the Air Carrier you are flying with. Sometimes they let it slide other times NOT. This based on who's behind the counter where you Check-In due to Special Handling of baggage containing ammunition. Ammunition (or anything in your baggage that appears to be ammunition) is required to be declared at Check-In. An Air Carrier may refuse the carriage of ammunition unless you are traveling with a Firearm. Cheers, Number 10

Hypothetical circumstances: 1. My "buddy" and a I are going to hunt in Namibia. 2. Each of us have fantastic "free" air miles we wish to use, but on different airlines. So he is flying Delta and I am flying United to FRA where we will meet and both fly Air Namibia on to WDH. 3. We each are taking only one rifle. In order to minimize baggage, he will carry both rifles (his .300 Win and my .338) in his super fancy two-gun airline case. This is great, because I don't own a case and his is the Caddilac of bulletproof rifle cases. He is also a packrat who takes everything he owns except the kitchen sink. Once his personal checked bag is packed it weighs 49.9 pounds, so there is no weight available for my 100 rounds of .338 ammo. 4. So I pack my ammunition in my checked bag to bring with me, sans gun, on the other airline. Is there something wrong with this scenario?

Be sure and let us know how that all works out for you---

Yep, conspiring to diminish your chances is not a good idea (unless you are Walter). Dependent personality disorder is not cool (unless you are Walter), nor should a good friend be an enabler/co-dependent (unless you are Saeed). This is Tuff Luv: Spring for your own Tuff Pak and have some redundancy in transport.

Guys, Why don't you consult Kathi Klimes, Gracy Travel or Steve Turner rather than guessing. They will know exactly what you can do or not do. "You probably will have no problems" is a recipe for disaster. Mark MARK H. Piss poor planning? Carry some of his crap in your bag so he can check the ammo is his bag since he is transporting both rifles. Hunting: Exercising dominion over creation at 2800 fps.

Practicality aside, I think you are doubling your chances of getting screwed here. If his gun case goes missing or misplaced, you guys are screwed. If your ammo is held up, misplaced or missing you are both screwed also. If you both have your own gun and ammo, then if something goes wonky you still have a rifle (and ammo) to borrow. If I were going to be clever at all, I would load up a box of 338 with 300WM brass and a box of 300 on 338 WM brass and exchange boxes, so at least if one of you loses your ammo you'll have a box in reserve, but even that degree of cleverness has potential for causing sticky issues. I think it might just be best to do it the regular tried and true method and maybe attend an extra service or two at the House of Worship of your choice a couple of weeks before departing. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside
