I'm looking at a 2012 buff/pg hunt in Zim. I would need to get to Harrare and charter from there. My question is two part; 1. How safe is Harrare if my wife and I were to want to stay 1 or 2 extra nights there? 2. What of interest is there or are we better suited doing something else? Thanks

Take a short trip outside of the city and climb Domboshawa a large granite kopje not far from the city. In terms of safety, I would have worries you will find everyone to be friendly and helpful. Mike

Justin, I might recommend if you'd like to layover somewhere in Zim for a couple of days go to Victoria Falls. I think you and your wife would find the Falls more interesting. Sadie and I toured both the Falls and Harare well before the unrest of the last decade and found Harare to be much like any other 3rd world city with much urban squaller and not that many really interesting points. It has to be worse now. You can charter out from Vic Falls to your hunting area or in many cases drive from there to camp. Mark MARK H. Is there anything comparable to the Bulawayo Club or something with that "Colonial" feel? Good question about hunting stores too. Would love to see Victoria Falls, planning on hunting in the Save, so not sure about the logistics though.

The Bronte Hotel is nice place to stay and have dinner.Very colonial. Not sure i would stay longer than i had to. Vic Falls is well worth he extra time. Not a bad place to rest up after the flight and give your bags a chance to catch up to you.

Another vote for visiting Patrick Mavros's studio. His silver colletion is amazing. Also another vote for Domboshawa i went there in 2005 and took some great pictures. While I found it entertaining to watch the hookers work out of the bar at the Bronte, the best thing I found to do in Harare was to get out. "There are worse memorials to a life well-lived than a pair of elephant tusks." Robert Ruark

This thread was just what I needed this evening. Very entertaining. I chuckled my way through it, and shootaway's post took me way beyond chuckling. Good humor shootaway, though I know you probably didn't intend for it to be. Where have you been lurking anyway? I thought you must have lost yourself in the Rockies or something....I don't know about quality but you may get a good deal on a table-cloth at the flea market. ... As for what to do in Harare, I concur with those who suggest you get out ASAP. It is not dangerous, but it is a dump. Cheers, Dave

Patrick Mavros studio is a good place to go. We also have several table-clothes, bed spreads and pillow covers purchased in Harare although I do not go shopping with my wife so not sure where. She also buys other jewelery but again not sure where. She is taken shopping by PH's wife. The Amanzi lodge and Restaurant is a nice place to stay. BigB

+1, a number of good restaurants in Harare but don't expect a piece of meat like Morton's or Ruth Chris. Mike

How about a drive-by at Mugabe's place?

Like any big city, there are places you don't want to go and that are or can be unsafe. Have an escort that knows the city. I think the best plan is to get in and out as quickly as possible. See a sight or two if you must, but the beauty of Zim, and there is much, lies in the countryside and not in Harare. JPK Free 500grains

I am hanging around learning from people like you who been hunting africa for awhile. When I stayed at Bob's last time I was there,Bob named some shopping area in Harrare that he thought was worth visiting.I can't remember the name of the place. Some place that you could find really nice things for oneself or where you could buy a nice gift to take back.

check with the hookers at the Bronte-they should be able to point you in the direction of good buys on bed linen. Vote Trump- Putin’s best friend… To quote a former AND CURRENT Trumpiteer - DUMP TRUMP

Just don't drink any water out of the taps, its riddled with shit, Cholera is not a great way to die. The best part of Harare is the road leading out, But be sure to drive past "Botox Bobs" place, you will see how 'the donor funds' buy a stable full of the latest "Wa Benzis" no African dictator can bear to be without half a dozen or so - you know. ..

Thanks guys. Sort of what I expected to hear about Harrare, just thought I may be missing some hidden jewel. Had only planned on staying one night with the outfitter pre-charter out, doesn't sound like any need to extend the stay.

There are places you might go - ask your Ph to show you around if you find time - stroll down this street (gunshop, fishing tackle...) Visit African Hunter Mag. guys, have a pint at "Keg's" (you may stumble upon someone familiar there), visit John Northcote (I hope he'll still be around)...don't be afraid to ask - community is pretty small and guys there know each other rather well.

I have sent several days in Harare... I was in the care, custody, and control of either my PH or my videographer... I even had my wife with me on my last trip... I never worried about my security... At least one of us [guess which one] was armed at all times. But I was never placed on Defcon 2 while there. Or anywhere else in Zim. ALL the people I have come in contact with in Zimbabwe have been very friendly. And I have driven all over the country, from one end to the other about 4 times or so. If in Harare over the weekend take trip to the ranges at Cleveland and blast off what ever ammo you got left. You may even bump into a few local gun nut 'celebs'. Harare is very safe although rather go around with someone in the know. If you can go to Vic Falls or book a houseboat trip on Kariba
