Ammo Box in Luggage or not?

Gents,

I have a Pelican case for my upcoming trip for carrying ammo. It will accept two locks at the corners. I also have cable lock that I can wrap tightly that I use for my trail cam.

We are traveling lightly with the ability to have all of our clothes in a carry on. I was originally going to put the ammo box inside yet another hardside non-zippered piece of luggage, but am now thinking this is overkill as this piece will not serve much purpose other than to contain the ammo.

Your thoughts please.

Flyimg out of Jhb I've done it both ways. So in the checked baggage and a separate lockable container checked in with the rifle. They seem to prefer the latter, but it is generally NOT what the.baggage rules say so I take a set to argue the point if need be. I can't comment on flights out of US or Europe.

7MMNut,

I'd ask your travel agent or the airlines themselves. Other than for domestic travel in RSA my experience is that airlines want the ammo in luggage of some type regardless of whether it is in a lockable case of its own or not.

US domestic, place it in your checked baggage. The last 2 times in Joberg(flying in country via SAA) they have required that it be in a separate locked case, and checked and registered along with your firearms. Not in your normal checked baggage.

What Greg said. All 3 times Dulles to Johannesburg in my checked luggage. All 3 times East London to Johannesburg it had to be out and checked separately.

I just got back from Joberg today. Ammo can be in check on bags to and from Joberg. There are three in country cities that require the ammo to be in a separate lock box OUTSIDE the checked bags. East London is one of them. I went there and back. Also flew to Hoedspruit. Ammo was allowed in check on bag. Wierd rules and everybody everywhere wanted their hands greased. Great place to hunt, but crappy people to deal with at airports.

Thanks for the replies, I gained some knowledge there that I was not anticipating.

I was asking the question more from a point of view of making it least likely for my ammo to be stolen. It would seem a Pelican case with locks on it would appear more likely to contain something valuable and more likely to be lifted. This versus putting the same locked Pelican case in a normally locked suitcase.

I'm flying Lufthansa to Germany before flying SAA on to Jo'burg. Lufthansa requires ammo to be packed seperately from the rifles. I'm taking 3 rifles in my Tuffpak and there's really not enough room for the ammo too.
