I recently flew internationally and realized upon arriving at my destination that my locked case in general and checked luggage had been "jimmied" and one of the locks were broken. They had not got in the case for some reason. Somebody must have interupted the perpetrator and he or she had given up. This was a very modest, plastic case from Cabelas with two key locks. They might as well have stolen the whole case instead of just breaking in. Anybody know a good case, lockable, not too large or heavy?

I transport my rifles and guns in Negrini cases that are then placed into SKB cases. The SKB cases are much stronger than the cheap Cabelas stuff. They have big latches, two of which have internal locks. But they also have some hefty areas for a couple of padlocks.

Placing the firearms in the Negrini (or other plastic case) gives double shock protection and discourages a quick grab at contents if the SKB case is opened.

If it's a replacement lockable ammo case you're looking for, you might try these:

They come in different sizes. I use one myself which has bee very sturdy for overseas travel.
The price in the link is NZD

This is why I use a Tuffpak. I am sure someone has broken in to one at some point but I am not aware of anyone who has.

I have used a Tuffpak for 15 years. It's a bit scuffed up, but going strong. Still doesn't solve pilferage from checked luggage. The airline limits carry on to 18 lbs, then tells you to not put any optics, cameras, or electronics into your checked baggage. I have taken to loading up my pockets before weigh-in, and repacking my carry on before security.
I still haven't found a good system for ammunition, but so far have been lucky.
I wonder if someone might have tried to get in to your lock box thinking there was some high value item in it?

If they steal the valuables and replace it with a book or something, it is harder to discover where the theft took place (and easier for the thief to hide the loot. If the entire case disappears at a certain airport, it narrows down the population of suspects.

Americase Safari case or their Premium one gun case and an Americase ammo case has always gotten it done for me. Never a problem of any kind.

I think you need to be careful with fairly expensive cases though. The more expensive-looking the case, the more it catches the eyes of the thieves, who seem to think that there is something of value inside, like an expensive camera, etc.

I'm flying Delta into Jo-burg so I will have my ammo inside a locked, plastic box, inside my checked luggage for that leg of the trip. Using SAA to go to Zim, will mean the ammo box will have to be separately checked.

BuffHunter;
I have flown SAA for over 15 trips from the U.S. to Jo-Berg and never had to check my ammo separate and have always kept it in my locked suitcase. However, once in Jo-Berg if flying SAA to other destinations, example, Port Elizabeth, you are required to check your ammo in a separate case. Is this a new rule SAA has come up within the last year?

According to the SAA website (I checked it a couple of months ago), ammo needs to be checked separately.

Seems pretty stupid to me. In the past I would put half my ammo in my locked gun case and half in my luggage. Worked perfectly. I think TSA still states ammo can go in a the locked case with the firearm, but Delta wants it separate from the firearm. I will check both websites just prior to leaving, just to see what the latest requirements are.

Back in 09 I flew from Jo-berg to Bulawayo. SAA made me remove my ammo box from my checked luggage. It was a small box with 40 rounds of 470 Ammo. The ammo box was loaded on the plane and actually arrived in Bulawayo. I have flown out of Jo-berg several times since on SAA to Bulawayo, Harare, and Lusaka and that has never happened again.

I guess you have to be prepared for almost anything.

Thanks for the information. I will be flexible and hope I can get the ammo through in my checked luggage.
