My wife and I will be knocking around Windhoek for a couple of days in early June. Any suggestions re what we ought to see or do? I understand there is a tannery there that is pretty interesting. Anyone have any other suggestions for sightseeing or shopping?

If you are staying at the Kalahari Sands, there is a department store just down the block. There is a huge outdoor market in walking distance. Also a wildlife ranch where you can watch them feed the Lions. Joe's Beer Hall is a must see.

For the life of me I can't remember the name of the shopping area in downtown but it is across from the Kalahari Sands Hotel.

There are many jewlery stores and other shops and the locals sell crafts and such in the open plaza between the shops. In fact, I got better deals in this plaza on curios than just about anywhere else including the markets in Vic Falls.

Also, Joes Beer House is a must.

Do breakfast at the Namibian Craft center... walking distance from the hotel... All the shops up and down independance Ave... also walking distance. Bushman Art and Koegl? or something like that for unique African stuff. O'Portuga restuarant just down Mandela from Joe's is great and my favorite... just alow 1.5 hours for your dinner. Visit Rosenthal's, Ahren's, and The Gun Shop, and the Agra Co-op Gun Shop. Nakara Leather in the Northern Industral Park is a good place - you can buy whole tanned hides and leathers. If you are a beer guy, You may be able to book a tour of the brewery. Tourmoline jewelry store is our favorite. Christ Church tour. For a modest fee you can watch lions feed at Okapuka 30-40 minutes north of Windhoek. They feed twice a day and it is facinating to be that close to lions feeding. Worth the trip. They also have a lunch and dinner, game drives, etc. It has been a few year since I was last there and Windhoek may have changed some. Of course you also need to see Swakomund and Sossusvlei if you can make time. Call me if you want to chat about Namibia. 316-303-2933
