Here's the question, I need to book flights between Johannesburg-Windhoek-Johennesburg in Sept. 2010. My overseas flights are scheduled/booked already with British Airways and they have a partner airline that I can use for the JNBb-WND-JNB connection I need. This partner airline is called COMAIR, LTD and my question concerns what the firearms carriage policy is.(And their ticket price is cheaper than SAA) While I have reviewed Comair's website and found some info about this, its not clear WHAT Comair routes firearms are permitted on. I've emailed Comair direct with that question and so far NO answer from them, and I have emailed some of the well known travel agents on this site with the same question and so far NO responses back from them either.

So has anyone that frequents here, every used Comair for the JNB_WND_JNB route or have any reliable info concerning their firearms carriage policies.

If all anyone wants to do is bash my choice of using BA, then don't bother responding and wasting both our times. I've used BA before to get to Africa and found them quite nice when following their guidlines.

Thats how I see it.

Willi:

You may want to do a search on this forum and "African Hunting" regarding Comair.

I believe they do not transport firearms on any of their routes.

How did you book your ticket? I have always used Gracy and this type of scenario is why.

Good Luck.

I, along with a hunting partner are flying from Joburg to Victoria Falls in early September of this year via Comair. I had the same questions regarding tjheir firearms policy and my wife and I both spoke with representatives of Comair. We documented our conversations and had the agent make a notation on our booking that we would be transporting HUNTING FIREARMS. It seemed to be very important to specify hunting firearms because when my wife first spoke with an agent he was adamant that we could not transport "firearms". Send me a PM with an email address and I'll forward youwhat info I have on Comair's policy.

I also have used BA to get to SA - twice and they are 100% by me. As far as Comair - I used them to get from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth and had no problems with my rifles. It's not much but I hope this helps.

Bigguy458,
PM sent

John
thanks for the info.

I will be declaring my firearms to BA per their policy and hope this will also suffice for any requirements that Comair has since they are a regional affliate for BA.

Ask your PH his opinion of COMAIR.

British Airways/Comair accept sporting weapons on the Windhoek flights. Just ensure you advise them prior to departure of you firearm details.

Any reason why you did not include these flights when you purchased the tickets to Johannesburg? Comair is a British Airways franchise operator and as such publish fares all the way to Windhoek. The reason I ask is you would now have a separate ticket between Johannesburg and Windhoek and return and if traveling in coach class would be restricted to maximum baggage weight of 20kgs (approx. 44lbs)

Didn't know about the Comair connecction/availability when I did my BA tickets to/from Joberg. Hoping to upgrade my BA tickets with miles that I have saved up with BA, but so far no luck with that thru the BA website. I ended up getting Comair tickets last week, and decided what the heck, bought First Class tickets for those flight segments (difference in price was a little more than $200.00 for the First tickets and I thought that the was worth it, especially compared to my other overall safari costs).
I don't fly until Sept 2010, so still have plenty of time to notify BA about traveling with "sporting firearms".
Will be using Air 2000 as my meet and greet when I get there. (Joberg).

I have clients who fly comair into Harare all the time with HUNTING firearms and we have never had a hassle. In fact , we avoid SAA because they have a horrific bagggage theft record . Air Namibia and SAA airlink do however also operate into Windhoek and all will carry declared hunting weapons.
