I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has an opinion or input into the following What do you look for in a Guest house or Lodge when you are overnighting on the way to a hunt?? ie Overnight in Joburg or Harare then onto the Valley etc. Please let me know what you consider essential, important and nice to have, over the top etc etc. This is part of some research I am doing which hopefully in the long run will help hunters get more value for money.

Personally, I just look for a comfortable place that's in a safe neighborhood. Doesn't have to be fancy. By the time you get there after a long flight all I want to do is sleep. Most of all it should be reasonably priced. I've found too many places in Africa want to rip off hunters with outrageous prices. For example, just look at the prices for charter flights. +1 Being dead beat tired getting off a jet in J'burg and having someone babysit you through everything is welcoming experience. I've stayed at Afton House on my last two stays in J'burg. On my last trip one of my bags was slow getting up to baggage claim and Bruce with Afton/Gracy had someone with the airport staff come check on me. Really wasn't needed but it was nice none the less. Having someone meet you when you come through customs, take you to the guest house, provide you with a good meal and then return you to the airport and see you off is great. "...Africa. I love it, and there is no reason for me to explore why. She affects some people that way, and those who feel as I do need no explanation." from The Last Safari
