Just got back from a great hunt in Mozambique with Marromeu Safaries. In credible amount of game. The anti poaching efforts has reaped the rewards! My point. We were charged $410 each way for each hunter for rifle and ammunition being told because SA air required us take our ammo out of our luggage and be shipped separately. This way they could charge for another bag. When we arrived in Johannesburg SA told us to put our ammo back in with our luggage and didn't charge for rifle or ammo. Just a "shell game" by BA. The total cost to bring a rifle from home. $100 to assist with Canadian export permit to get permit in time, $250 charge by Canadian Airlines $820 airline charge by BA, $350 US for rifle permit in Mozambique. Total cost $1635 per rifle. This is coupled with the restrictions of how long one could stay in a transit country and even which airlines you use. To many bringing your own rifle, the one you practiced with and reloaded for with all the anticipation of your African adventure is half the African experience. They are not so slowly taking that all away from us insidiously through using money and hassle. We have tried going with outfitters and using their rifles with disastrous results of having rifles that did not even function properly to scopes that could not be correctly sighted to running out of ammo. Marromeu surpassingly had excellent rifles in camp, but we couldn't risk that again. How do the reset of you feel about the travel with guns experience?

jhaney,

I agree traveling with guns seems to get more difficult year after year. Interesting what you said about SAA not requiring you to check your ammo as a separate piece of luggage because they have required me to do it.

I didn't take my own guns to Australia this year and it was so easy. On every international hunt I've taken with the exception of 1 I've always taken my guns. Until this Australian trip I had forgotten how much more difficult guns make the trip. It was a breeze without the guns. Graham Williams had very nice rifles and the equal of what I would have brought. That of course is not always the case but I think it is becoming more common. I'm off to Mauritius in '20. The outfitter has several Blasers so I should be good there.

Jim, here’s a solution. Next time, fly Emirates.

They fly out of Vancouver and are very gun friendly. You have to get permission from the airline to fly with guns and ammo, but it’s no big deal. They do pay extra attention to the bags with guns & ammo, so it should arrive with no problems.

BA sucks, as far as I’m concerned.

I do not think Emirates flies out of Vancouver.

They do out of Toronto.

This is all due to Air Canada and their STAR ALLIANCE idiots refusing to allow Emirates to compete with them.

I flew Emirates to London, then BA to Vancouver!

Never again!

On my next trip, I flew Emirates to Toronto, then Air Canada to Vancouver.

Air Canada Business Class was infinitely better than BA's First Class!

Bloody hell!

Cannot even bear imagining!

Sitting between Mark Sullivan and Cal!

One glorifying himself and thinking of another country he can operate in illegally!

And the other one screaming "YES, YES, YES! You do not need no license! I will come hunt with you!" rotflmo

In coach as well. Wink

Seriously this post is just another reason to avoid flying with BA. They have been an anti gun airline for many years.

Yes, it seems I was mistaken. At any rate, I’d fly from Whitehorse to wherever he can most easily catch an Emirates flight. Toronto or perhaps Seattle if he doesn’t mind departing from the USA.
