Guys leaving for Zim on May 24th on SAA (JFK-JBERG-BULAWAYO). Has anyone researched the whereabouts of the CBP office prior to departure from Terminal 4 (SAA)? Is there a CBP office at the terminal where one can check in PRIOR to airline check-in? Or, is there a CBP office elsewhere at the airport where one needs to get to? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Excellent question. I'm flying out of JFK as well but in the beginning of May. I won't be back until the 21st so I'm not sure I'll be able to help in time. I'm hoping someone who flies out before me chimes in provide some first hand experience.

On the first floor arrivals hall, there is a entrance for customs near the money exchange. Plain metal door and small sign.

I've gone there to get a 4457 before a flight.

I was told by CBP in Vegas that when I checked my luggage, an airline employee would escort me and my firearm to CBP for inspection. It may vary at other locations, but it can't hurt to call CBP at your airport of departuer in advance

I've flown the JFK-Jo'Berg flight many times. When you check in, the airline folks call the TSA/NY Police who show up, inspect your firearms, and take them from there. I love this flight, as you arrive in JB at 8:50, in plenty of time to catch the connecting flights to the other southern Africa hunting destinations. Saves an overnight and the whole SAPS process.

Still trying to find an answer for this Customs check at departure for the new ITN deal for May 20.....TSA and PA Police will be the easy part.

I leave May 8th. In the past I have been told that you just checked in and the ticket agent called whom needed. Now that we have to check in with C&BP to notify of the firearm shipment...I wonder if we do same...meaning just go to the ticket agent?

Get your 4457 at Newark-Liberty Airport in advance of your trip.

So, I fly from Dulles to JFK then on to Jo'Berg. Can CBP at Dulles perform the inspection or do I need to collect my rifle and checked baggage containing my separately packed ammo at JFK then recheck those items when the inspection is complete? What a cluster f...

The CBP website Q&A on travelling with firearms gives direction on electronically registering via the AES system (https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/323/kw/AES%20Direct/sno/1). I didn't see any requirement for an in person inspection prior to departure. Has anyone seen where this requirement is referenced?

Just got back from Zim trip. On the way out of JFK, some one from South African Airlines desk called Port Authority. They came, checked everything out, asked for no paper work of any kind, and escorted us and gun case to the loading area. No problem.
Coming back thru JFK, customs only asked to see the 4457's, checked the numbers, very polite, and sent us on our way, no problems.
The new paperwork was never asked for by any one coming or going at JFK.

I take off from JFK May 1, so maybe I'll breeze through as well. Though I do have my paperwork and ITN number just in case.
