TrophymanLocked Checked bag-Delta required
Just got back from a beautiful trip to Limpopo region. One hitch was Delta clerk said the checked bag containing the ammo box must also be locked. I called bullshit and showed her the Delta requirements. She said it was a new SAP rule. We had to go to the CMA store and buy cheap little locks and lock the bag. When we got home, the locks were cut off and laid on top of the clothes, but the bag had not been gone through. Just a game to show us they are over us. Secondly, there was a TSA agent, (I use the term loosely), in full uniform with a red 1/4" dot on his forehead, saying praise Allah to everybody. I didn't happen to get searched that time, but he was not going to search me. Guaranteed. This was in Atlanta, right at the boarding gate. What is TSA thinking?

They don't, as they continually prove.

What was TSA thinking, indeed? It is just as inappropriate for a government employee to be making an expression of religion while on the job as it is for a presidential candidate to take the position that all Americans must pray to Jesus.

No kidding. It should be standard TSA policy not to hire confused Hindus.

Use Enough GunTrophyman: I locked my ammo case(built in locks) and the devils pried it open and nearly broke the locks. Go figure. The a---holes don't know what they're doing. I believe that they take great delight in doing some of this to us, and would do more if they could. I would have reported the kook praising Allah in a heartbeat.

Michael Robinson"They" did the same thing to me once.
"You must lock this bag if it contains ammunition," I was told.
I said that "they" were mistaken.
"They" replied that it must be locked.
I had a couple of locks (semper paratus) so I locked it.
Another "they" cut the lock off.

Gotta roll with it, unfortunately.

500NI got called back in Aust once over the PA system. The supervisor grabbed me as I came through and whispered that an "over zealous" baggae handler had queried my green Army Eschelon bag wan't locked and had a red tag for ammo on it - you know the old type, big zip, easily cut with a knife or ripped open and said just agree with him.
So I played along, said the Ammo box inside was locked - a steel money container and that all was as per the regs - which I had on me.
But no, he said the bag had to be locked so I locked it.
And then he queried why the steel box weighed so much a I had bullets in there as well as ammo !!! He tried to tell me I had more than 5kgs of ammo.
Anyway, all sorted, the Supervisor just raised his eyebrows.

LabmanDam - I headed out of Atlanta on Monday and I was planning on packing a small quantity of ammo in my gun case with the rest in checked luggage in a locked box. That way if my bag gets delayed, I'll still have ammo for the hunt. I spoke to Delta on the phone and after a long hold while the agent checked with supervisors, they told me that was OK for the trip to Africa, but not on the return due to SAPS rules. I have no problem with the return flight, but now I'm wondering about those idiots at the check in desk on the departure.

D. NelsonThe rule for all airlines and all ammo/rifle carriage is: Whichever way you have it, you will be required to change it.
I haven't had the same airline do the same thing in 10 safaris.
Arrive at check-in prepared for as many options as you can.
Regards, D. Nelson

500NConsidering the rules are set by IATA, it is unbelievable how the airline like to stuff about and create a whole world of complexity when they really don't have to.

Too funny Jorge. I spent a month in India last year. Never did see a Hindu mention Allah. Plenty of Muslims of Buddhists there, too.
In northern India I saw pictures of the Dalai Lama in tons of monasteries, but I never did see His Holiness himself - until I was in Chicago a few weeks ago and practically ran right into him. The Pope may have his own plane, but the Dalai Lama flies commercial.
