I know it is miserable, but flying on air line miles is what makes the trip possible. At least I get to go first class.

Dallas to London 5/2 and London to Joberg 5/3.

I have flown this route the last 2 years on BA in first class using AA miles. yes, it is a bit out of the way but i used the layover to go into London sightseeing and first class makes it a winner.

Charles, I hope your flying without firearms or flying a physical BA flight as an American Codeshare as American will not transport firearms through the UK.

Charles,

Unless something has changed recently Jaglav is correct. If your not taking guns you'll be fine. If you fly BA the whole way from the US to JNB that will work fine and should be seamless.

Jaglav and Mark,

Thanks for the tips. I have done this trip a couple times and American will not allow checking firearms to UK. I will be borrowing the outfitter's rifles. While it would be nice to carry my own I don't own anything larger than 30-06 and I enjoy borrowing Pieter's .375 H&H.

Access to the Concorde lounge helps. Smiler

Combined with the ability to sleep on the flights means I arrive pretty well adjusted to the time difference.

the Concorde lounge is really something else. imagine a nice restaurant with a menu, waiter and wine list( plus the elegant bar/lounge). i always eat a fine dinner before departure then board and enjoy more sleeping time. BA really does a nice job for first class passengers transiting Heathrow.

The "board room" is nice compared to the AA lounge. Little or no competition for the computers and nice young ladies offering to bring you drinks and snacks.

Yeah, with no guns, it's a nice route. I love dinner at Scott's before heading in - top 2 or 3 seafood in Europe for me... + about 70 yards from Purdey's Wink
