When I head to Zim in a couple of months...my agent recommeded I fly Dallas to JFK overnight and take the morning flight from JFK to Jo'berg so that I could check my rifles straight thru to Vic Falls (Delta/then SAA). She says there is a provision allowing for rifles overnighting in NYC. Anyone ever done that??? Have any words of wisdom? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. I did it in November. Apparently there is a 24 hour grace period that allows you to transit NYC airports without a firearm permit. I was a little nervous but after talking with Steve Turner he explained it to me. It's odd dragging a rifle around NYC but I had no problems checking in the next day. I use a tuffpak so everyone I met thought it was camera equipment.

I would check with both the NY Port Authority police, who are responsible for the airports, and the regular NY police. Get names and badge #'s of the officers. You can't be too careful with guns in NYC. I've flown out of JFK several times to Africa and never had any problems, but I just drive to the airport early in the AM. Tom Z NRA Life Member

I did this in 2010. One word of advice. When you get off the plane immediately get to the baggage terminal. Unless they have changed things, your rifle will come out with the rest of the luggage. No seperate room or security and the doors out to the street are just a few yards away. When a friend told me this story, I didn't believe him, but damned if it wasn't accurate. I sure hope they changed things. Regards, Steve

I was thinking of doing this as well and spending a night with my daughter in NYC. Guess will have to research the transit rules. Edit: Found this. There's a link here to the Administrative Code. It's in section 10-305. http://www.nysrpa.org/files/nyc-admincode.pdf It reads:

PG - I flew out of JFK in 2013 & 2014 and on the return flights my guns did not come out with the regular luggage. They were delivered to a separate area. Tom Z NRA Life Member

My experience with flying out of JFK with rifles after overnighting in NYC with them. It was NO problem and actually now my favorite route to depart. Dallas to JFK...picked up rifles and luggage at carousel. Got taxi and went to near airport hotel. JFK to Vic Falls...no issues at all at airport. Hotel shuttle to airport. Checked in on SAA. They called the Port Authority Police. They were very nice...checked the rifles and then put them through TSA for me. All fine...slightly less than 15 hrs straight through to Jo'berg. Short layover in OR Tambo. SAA flight out to the Falls. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Lane Easter, DVM A born Texan has instilled in his system a mind-set of no retreat or no surrender.
