Leaving May 1 for SA. Taking the wife for the first time. Need to know what adapters we will need for hair dryers, curling irons, cell phones, etc. TIA

Remember SA, like most of Africa, is 220. US hairdryers and curling irons will last approximately 8 seconds on 220 and the shower of sparks is quite spectacular.

You can use a Type M adapter - https://www.amazon.com/Ceptics...m+south+africa&psc=1 on ANYTHING that has an inline transformer. This includes most cell chargers, laptop chargers, camera battery and video battery chargers.

Wife will either need purchase 220 compatible appliances or try a transformer. Some times they work, some times they don't.

Gun dog is right. You may not need to convert the South African 220V power to 110V if your electrical appliance has a built in converter. Many modern ones have this feature.
You still need an "adapter" with the three prong M type pattern for South Africa. Plug that in the wall and then plug your North America 2 prong plug into it.

If not you will need a converter/adapter like the Bestek mod. MRJ201GU This has the right plug adapter and will also convert the power down from 220V to 110V.

But remember, the plug-in voltage transformers ("converters") are typically limited in their amperage. Most of them won't power something like a 1500 watt hair dryer without melting to slag. So be sure to check the wattage (or amperage) rating on any transformer you might use against that of the appliance you're plugging into it.

A really good tip when traveling is to take a 3 or 4 plug power board so you only need one converter plug. That saves multiple converter plugs.
You probably all know this already.
Cheers

I suggest you ask your outfitter to supply you with the high power appliances , like hair dryer and curling irons etc.

The cell phones and cameras are easy to charge and usually accept variable voltages so only a configuration adaptor is needed.
