But, facts are Boeing screwed up.

If this is in fact the case, at minimum there will be massive civil litigation. For something like this in which many died, one has to wonder if there will be criminal charges.

Boeing went to hell when the bean counters took over the company from the airplane people.

You forgot the most important part.

According to a friend that works in the industry, the Boeing debacle happened because the regulatory workforce had failed to keep up with the engineering advances and were no longer skilled to make assessments of this complexity.

They essentially were left to rely on Boeing's own people to "self police" and became a scenario of having a fox in the henhouse.

I'm not sure of the decline of the regulatory expertise. Hiring quota's, preferential hiring/promotion or the government jobs not being seen as attractive probably all play a role.

No excuse for Boeing, they work in an industry that by nature should be risk adverse and they should have seen the problem.

So the engineers were so advanced that they engineered the planes to drop out of the sky again?
I can imagine the regulatory workforce to lag behind though, but as you said, they should be risk averse enough to keep their planes flying, not crashing.

Ever read Hailey's book about the auto industry, Wheels ? Fictional, but makes the point, is it cheaper to repair a design defect, or pay for the consequences ?
