I was advised by my travel agent that I needed updated 4457's for an upcoming trip. The closest airport to me with a CBP presence is San Antonio, which is a two hour drive.

Last week, I called their office several times to confirm their schedule and to see if I needed an appointment. No answer after approximately 15 attempts. So, I took the chance today to drive in.

CBP has reconfigured their offices in San Antonio over the years. Currently, there is a space for "Deferred Inspections" and another next door for Global Entry interviews. The Global Entry door has a large sign that says not to enter and wait to be called. The Deferred Inspection room was unmanned. After standing around trying to figure out what to do and calling the office again repeatedly with no answer, I was able to get the attention of a cleaning lady who summoned an agent to come assist me. He instructed me to go to the Global Entry office!

I went next door and he met me and we took care of the necessary business in view of a few folks conducting their interviews. He was polite and professional. I did confirm with him that despite the warning not to enter, I should go to that office for future 4457 business. He said yes, but the forms are good for life. I said, "maybe on this side but not in Africa!" That's another story...

So, for anyone needing a 4457 processed in San Antonio, don't expect anyone to answer the phone and just go to the Global Entry office near baggage claim in Terminal A between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

That is correct, but don't go when an international flight is landing or you will be waiting for that flight to clear.

I’ve been to a CBP “field office” in San Antonio, not located at the airport, quite a few officers were in the office. I wonder if one could get a 4457 at that office?

The guys in Houston have told me I don't need to bring the rifle in again to renew a 4457, just the old 4457 and they'll sign a new one.
