For those that have recently flown using Ethiopian Airlines, may I place my locked box of ammo in my checked bag? ...or must the locked box of ammo be checked separate. TSA says its OK to pack your ammo into the checked bag, but certain airlines have their own rules. What has been your experience? Thank you for your help.

Plan on being separate…. I didn’t fly Ethiopian just now but had my locked ammo inside another area of locked bag…
Had to pull out separate (never have before) on both United and Airlink
They didn’t harge me (actually first leg of flight I was able to keep in and South Africa made me pull it out)

When I flew Ethiopian the leg to Addis I had the ammo in my checked bag.

On return they had it stay in, but it was a very odd day- literally the first flight in to the US from there after they put the Covid restrictions into place.

I was hand walked by security everywhere.

Usually they make you take it out- I was ready for that.

They requested me to pack it in my checked luggage, I told them our local laws do not allow for that, they said no problem, they will ensure the bag is checked first by the local police on my side and then they will load it on.

All the airline staff seemed very clued up on how to handle firearms.

Thank you for your help gentlemen. And Saaed, I know exactly what you mean, I think we all have stories of the crazy (not knowing their own regs) airline clerk, then having to call the supervisor, who needs that when your on vacation.

YES. Ammo can be placed into checked bag. In a locked box. Not that Ethiopian cares . And you need a "declaring" paper for ammo from Ethiopian. If transfer in Addis you also have to go down to the dark basement and confirm it all before entering the plane Big Grin

Flew through Addis to and from Zim in May 2023. Ammo remained in locked container (Pelican) in my checked bag. They did ask to see it coming and going. Don't remember them explicitly counting rounds, but it took a few times explaining that I had no ammo coming back home, as I had "shot it all" in Zimbabwe during my hunt.
