hi Guys

Just doing some thinking and would like to know what your choice of accomodation would be for your overnight in Joberg on your hunting trip? If you could have it just the way you wanted it, how would it be?

Afton House worked for me. There are some others that aren't quite ready for prime-time.

I'm not looking for 5-star. I just want to get a good nights sleep. I don't care too much about sitting around talking to strangers. I'm in Africa to hunt. Anything else just gets in my way.

If they want to make me happy:

1. Have a fireplace and a fire in it.
2. Have the best dark rum available close by. 3. Have a comfortable bed.
4. Have Internet access so I can whip off a quick message to my wife.
5. Have good meals.
6. Get me to the airport on time, and point me in the right direction.

Afton House.

It's clean, safe, they take you anywhere(within reason)you want to go. They have a terrific breakfast and the steak dinner in the evening is nice enuff.

They can arrange firearms assistance and they are quality people.

I have met some interesting people there, from places and cultures I've not experienced. Most are hunters and talking with them about their destinations and expectations is enjoyable.

Cheers, Adrian

Aubrey,

I'd like to say that Adrian's considerations are like most. Safety, comfort and get me back and forth from the airport in a timely manner. I think it says a lot that Gracy Travel is working with Afton House now as part of their service.

Afton House.

They pick you up at the airport.

They either take you to a great location for dinner, or have a Brai at the House.

They will take you to great shopping locations [ I always stay there 2 days on the way to Zim.]

They take you back to the airport, and assist in getting you and your "stuff" on the plane.

They are Excellent, in every way.

Afton House for me. Others may well do as well, but after a dozen stays, I feel like I'm home. I know that I'll get picked up, pampered and back on the plane with time to spare.

I enjoy the good fellowship, too, with the folks coming and going on safaris. I still correspond with folks I met years ago and have even had them visit me at my home and me in theirs.

We hunted with Peter Harris on both occasions in South Africa.

He has a guest house in Pretoria, and it was just like a home away from home.

Food was great, and so was the company and accomodation.

I would avoid any hotel at any cost.

Did you stay at the new lodge on Zwavelpoort? It really is spectacular and you have the benefit of spending some time with Peter and the crew. His son has just set up his own operation now and they are doing well. Take a look at http://www.tallgrasssafaris.com/

That said though, if you need to be close to the airport, then there is no place like Afton House.

Good hunting

Afton. Have stayed there more than twelve nights and will be there again on the 18th of June and 25th of July.
Most of the guests are hunters and you often meet some great people there.

Ian,

The place we stayed in was in Pretoria, next door to Peter's own house.

It was his guest house.

Afton House by all means. What the others haven't said is their website www.aftonguesthouse.com They now handle your firearms permit. They will become home away from home.

Having just come back from SA and Mozambique, I'd like to recommend Afton House, too. Good room, decent prices, courtesy transport and one of the best steaks I've ever eaten.

Thanks Aubrey, too, for your clearing my rifles through SAPS. I'll never forget seeing you and Jason van Aarde standing at the barrier together, looking for the same client but neither of you knowing who the other was.

Since I don't care too much for Bed & Breakfast type of places, I would try the Southern Sun O.R. Tambo Intl. Airport on my next trip. However, I do agree that the people at the Afton are great people.

I did stay one night at the Tehillah Guest House due to Afton being full. It was very nice. The shower was big and had a big shower head with lots of water pressure. Had a fantastic breakfast too.
