Update on my second rifle build

ey all here is the latest pcture of my second rfle the rifle is complete all that is left to do is do all of the final finshing on the stock and metal, thanks to all who encoraged me in the process.

I wll post some detailed pictures of all the finish work.

Yes it is a de Haas FM 2 design and yes I built it all except for the barrel from raw materials.

Can you do Checkering? I am pushing it to get it as far as I have with the limited experince (insert none) I have and I am not about to mess up all the work that it took to make the stock from scratch out of a blank. It looks great, Ray. I hear you about doing checkering, I bought all the tools and just trying to straighten out some crooked lines in some old stocks has maxed out my current capabilities.

Very nice work. But until I win the Lotto and can aford to have someone checker it, or learn how to do it well enough myself (I don’t think I will live that long LOL) It will just have to be smooth for now. Thanks for posting the pictures. Wonderful work!

Ray,

Lots to learn about checkering, and it's easy to really foul up a good rifle. I suggest doing a cheap .22 or throw-away stock first and learning all the lessons about layout, keeping lines straight, checkering around curves, and a bunch of other things.

Yes I have a lot of scraps laying around that arent good for anything else that I will practice on but Im sure I will never get good enogh at it to try it on a rifle like this one. Thanks

Starting load development and scope adjustment. This is what it will do with Sierra 300 gr HP at 100 yrds this is just with starting load development and getting the scope dialed in, it did almost as well with the Lee 405 HB just a lower poi. It would be better If I was taking my time and trying for grouping

Ahlmans posts their prices. $200ish for simple point pattern at 20lpi. Carol, there, does good work. Not artisan quality, but good work. Better than I have seen on some high grade arms that should have been ashamed.

No sure on other shops. My guess would be a bit more. $300 and up more than likely. Depends on coverage, pattern and lpi. It is all charged by the hour and shop rates seem to vary quite a bit.

Better a smooth stock than a stock with crappy checkering.. $750 will get pretty nice, such as Kathy Foster, a checkering specialist with a superb reputation

Did some checking around re checkering...I hought I was slow...pretty easy for me to get 16-20 hours in a wrap over the grip and around the fore end.

Suprise: I'm in the "about average" elapsed tiem frame. So....what I've seen posted here "$200.00-$300.00" is totally unrealsitic.

I don't do much checkering, but when I do I measure the time in Months not hours.

How common are the electric checkering tools among the top end guys such as yourself?

Shelhamer said he could do a simple 4 panel job in a day. I'd be lucky to get it laid out in a day. Years ago I borrowed a Fordom tool from a friend and used it for one job, I was surprised how much faster it was and relatively easy to control.
