This is what I have and I would like to turn it into a custom Squirrel rifle. I understand that these in prestine condition are rare and expensive but this one is neither. It's been sporterized many moons ago but the metal is in good condition. Anyone here see a reason not to go thorugh with the conversion to 17M2 or 22Lr? Adam

Adam,

I would recommend dropping it off at my place if you are still stopping by. Big Grin

All kidding aside, put a good barrel on it, make a nice stock for it, and you'll have a beautiful custom hunting rifle.

Personally I would build it to be a mini-Rigby style rifle or a mini-Oberndorf sporter.

I have a Mauser-werke 22 sporter that I will be building into a custom. Cannot quite decide as to what, but maybe your project will give me a little inspiration.

Nathan, that sounds great, all work is pro bono right? Smiler

In all honesty I was thinking the same thing, Rigby style but with a 4x scope for the raging Ohio Squirrels Smiler. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Adam

Nice rifle, I'd probably use it as is.

Done up nicely it ought to be quite impressive, But you might end up looking more at the rifle instead of looking for squirrels. Wink

Well wouldn't you know, FALGRUNT lives right near me. I mean right near. I talked to him and am going over for a visit. I'll let you know if anything comes forth. Right now, it's going to get a new barrel , probably octagon, I've got a nice french walnut blank, don't know what I'm going to do about the scope, probably a quarter rib. I think in the next few years, you'll see Ohio turning out some to notch equipment. The caliber is going to be 17HM2.

Adam,

I pulled my little mauser action out and I was incorrect about the lug arrangement. It has two lugs (of sorts) in the rear, probably very similar to yours. One lug cams in a track inside the receiver, the other is the bolt root which rests against the receiver when the bolt is closed.

I took some more pictures, but did not want to drown out your thread. The second picture shows the lug.

Hmmm.. Who say's the original barrel isn't a great shooter..

I have an all original KKW.. It will put cheapie W-W plain wrap hollow points all in one bug hole @ 25yds. imagine what it would do with a decent scope & mounts..

The original barrel is a track driver, but this puppy is going to get a face lift.

Nathaniel, I have some stories after this road trip. I went to the Hallowell and Co house.
