Which action for a custom 7x64?

I am in possession of 100 pieces of new Norma 7x64 brass, but no rifle.

Naturally this needs to be rectified.

So, choosing between a 1909 Argentine, or a Belgian FN, pros and cons of each?

Rifle will be full custom, walnut stocked, most likely by Jim Kobe.

IMO the answer depends on which caliber was the actions original. So less work to gunsmith = less money to him. I have old FN commercial SAKO High Power action, it´s original factory caliber was .30-06 which measures are quite near of 7x64. So my choice would be FN action with a tad lenghtened Argentine magazine. Wink

Mmmm 7x64. Tell ya what, I have a gourgous 7x64, how about you just send the brass to me Smiler

Pretty much any standard Mauser would work, though a little feeding work MAY be required.

I'm working on an intermediate small ring that uses standard bottom metal. The hope is once 7x64 is proven out, a second switch barrel will be made in 9.3x62.

Pick a good clean action, I don't think you'll have any issue.

My BRNO 22H, with a .30-'06 length magazine, handles 7X64 perfectly.

I love the BRNO 21 action. They are getting a bit scarce, and are priced accordingly.

Either action would do fine. I tend to like the Argentine for no particular good reason other than I like the Argentine. As long as you are considering using a military action you might want to consider an'03 Springfield. It'll feed that cartridge without any modifications and makes a really handsome rifle.

Here in Germany the 7x64 is what the .30/06 is for the US-Hunter. But this time, it is a bit out of order. You can get for +- 500€ very, very fine rifles like Mauser 66, Sauer 80/90 in very good condition in the 7x64.

I just picked up one of these recently and the 7X64 Brenneke is on the "short list" for this action.

Domoulin Herstal Mauser action. Sarco has these going for $295 right now.

There isn't a huge selection of mounts for them but Sunnyhill and EAW make them.

The actions aren't perfect out of the box but can be made nice. .

I did a nice little .338-06 with one a few years back (different roll mark, same receiver) and have been very happy with it.

I´m sure you could find correct scope mounts from NECG who sells German made RECKNAGEL mounts and parts.

Probably so. I've gone with the Sunnyhill mounts twice now. They work well enough and look good to me.

You could also get your smith to cut the action to fit the mounts of your choice which is probably the best option of all.

I have a Ruger M77RS in 7x64. A great caliber. Pity so many in the US are in the dark on some of the great metric calibers. Good choice . . . and hard to beat a 1909 Argentine action too.

That action has a lot going for it, good price too.

Just how rough is it?

The first one I bought the safety needed to be re-timed, the bow mount floorplate lever needed to be ground smooth and the floorplate itself had a little too much play in it. My gunsmith fixed everything and said it wasn't a big deal.

This last one I bought, everything is fine on it except the bolt and cocking cam don't mate up correctly. I'm sure this will be an easy fix too but it does need some attention when it comes out of the box.

The bluing is poor and the way these are packaged it has rub marks through the finish anyway.

All that said, I think they are a fantastic bargain. It operates smooth and is a good looking action.

Yes, the one on the bottom was replaced. They come out of the box with a FN style handle. I'll probably leave the newest one as is.

I like the straight handle best albeit a hair long. Very nice job on the rifle. By the way, are those extractors nicely machined and hold an '06 case well or do those need tweaking?

It handles the .30-06 cases very well from feeding to extraction.
