I've never seen a stock of any type of walnut that has been stained with alkenet root solution. It sounds as if it is just another material used for staining wood. For those who have used it on black walnut stocks, can you give me an idea of the color it provides, and even better, if you have a picture of stock done with it, could you post a picture. thank you.
Used it; the root is red and it makes red to purplish stain; I do not like it; there are stains already made that work better, for me. Laurel Mountain to be specific. I mix it with denatured alcohol.

I would highly suspect that Duane used alkenet on this one. Noted to be black walnut in the text. He may not have, but the color in it looks like it to me.
I haven't used it on black walnut, but used it on all my english walnut stocks. It adds a red to the light part of english walnut and brings out the black. I will give it a try it on some black walnut and see what it gives me and let you know.
I use Alkanet root only..I dislike these new wonder dies that take you back to wood while sanding no matter how carefull you are unless you like a thick shiny varnish type finish if you follow directions, they then say if you cut too deep and expose wood then just cover the spot with more die and varnish and continue...covering a spot never works..you have to sand the whole stock to wood to make everything match if you screw up..
My suggestion is buy a pack of Alkanet root from Duane its not that expensive, and give it a try, its sure easy by comparison and looks oh so much better IMO..
I use quite bit of it, but never on Black or Claro walnut, only on soft shell walnut, from turkey, Russia, Europe..I bet it would look nice on Maple and some of the lighter woods, maybe??? I would try on a test piece of that wood first...but I do that anyway.
