Hello everyone, i've just started ordering parts for my first custom. Im starting with a commercial mauser, chambered in 30-06, and so far i've ordered a Dakota 3 pos. safety, talley qr rings and bases, tubbs firing pin, and a kepplinger set trigger. the action is being sent to get trued, g33/40 lightening cuts, 8-40 screws, polished, and a new bolt handle. (duane wiebe's oberndorf style)
I plan on putting NECG iron sights (banded front, adjustable rear) and a barrel band sling stud. Im going to order a krieger CM barrel over thanksgiving break, and my question is whether a No. 1 or No. 2 sporter contour would be better for the iron sights. it's going to be cut at 22" with a short (1") shank. Im shooting for 7.5lbs all up with a 4x leupy. This is my first build, and its all new to me so thanks for reading and i hope you can help!

I forgot to note that I am doing all of the stockwork. It's a nice walnut stock that stripped, cut down the foreend and installed an ebony tip at 8" total, removed the high comb with a rasp, and put on a red pad. Im going to give it a good oil finish and try my hand at bedding and checkering after the metal work is complete.

If the mauser is a MKX, Daly 798 etc you will need to contact Dakota and ask for a longer locking pin. Or your smith will have to make one. Dakota is aware of the issue and provided mine free.

If it is also has a speed lock (factory short firing pin drop) you will also need to do some additional work to the cocking piece. Neither of these would keep me from using a Dakota. I'm having one installed on a MKX at the current time.

As usual just my $.02

You will be hard pressed to make 7.5 lbs. Order the lightest barrel possible.

Thanks rr340 for the heads up, it is a MKX, i'll look into it farther. 7.5lbs is just a number I'm hoping to get near. If i end up with another pound I wouldn't be unhappy. Just looking for a nice midweight do-all rifle that's a little bit different than anyone elses. Smiler

This is a Daly 7x57 barreled action with the barrel cut to 22" High Tech Stock and built blind using a Rem ADL trigger guard. With scope and loaded it is just under 7.5#

I have another built blind on a 16oz MPI stock 24" douglas #2 in 338 caliber and it right at 7.5#

The speed lock is on the right.

I just emailed dakota about the locking pin, and will hopefully hear back soon. I'm going with the #1 contour at this point. Its a ways down the road, but have you guys ever used the jerry fisher rounded bottom metal?

You might make 7.5 if you use their #0 Featherweight contour. It's 22" and weighs 2lbs.
