Just got an upgraded Cooper model 52 with the inletted winchester super grade type sling swivel studs. Who makes a sling swivel suitable for a fine rifle?

I think I would always at least start with NECG.

Dakota makes nice ones too! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Winston Churchill

Look at Talon Swivles. They are rock solid and Made in the USA. I have a set on my Murray 1" leather sling. Here is the Cabelas link to look at them. http://www.cabelas.com/p-0022129.shtml ________________________________________________ Maker of The Frankenstud Sling Keeper Proudly made in the USA Acepting all forms of payment

The rifle came with very nice inletted swivel bases, like those on vapodog's rifle. What I'm looking for are really nice swivels. The best I could find are fron New England Custom Guns, so I ordered them. If anyone comes across something really nice, meaning polished and good blueing, post it. Thanks

somebody was making a copy of Tom Burgess' swivels at one point. I had real ones but as I'm an idiot no longer do. they are same shape as those pictured above from dakota, but no visible screws. I wish somebody would make them again. Red

That is a beautiful base, but it is the swivels that attach between sling and base I am looking for.

I gotcha cobrad, I don't remember the site but there was a company that sold the hooks, which I guess was Old School. real cool but I don't know how they were in the field and can't find the sight. Duane, Tom's front one was easy of course as it went through the forearm and a nut threaded on the back side. his rear one was what was so trick, you drilled the stock, inserted a female threaded piece and epoxied it in place, then the sling base had a threaded piece on it that was turned via a tiny allen wrench inserted through a tiny hole in the swivel base. so when it was all done the only thing that showed was that tiny hole. I wish I'd taken pics. I donated the one set I had to ACGG one year for their auction, kick myself all the time now. Red

If they fit why not go with an original set of Winchester swivels made for the M70 Super Grade, M71 and 64 Deluxe, etc? They are availaqble at gun shows and on the internet.

This is the route I take with all my Winchesters of any description as well as many others. The Win SG swivels are a larger version of the Michael's, AAMOF the old Jaeger snap swivels (predecessor to the Michael's) were touted as being a more dainty and lighter-weight version of the SGs. Michael's and all the rest then jumped on the bandwagon and the older, larger Win SG swivels became a thing of the past in the 1950s/60s. The SG swivels are larger than the Michael's & other modern ones and they take their own larger-size bases. Yes, they are available on eBay but the prices are high for both the swivels and the bases. They were available in 4 sizes: 7/8"(common), 1"(common), 1 1/8"(super rare) and 1 1/4"(super expensive). The original Win SG bases are somewhat bulky and awkward-looking, often requiring clearance cuts in the wood. I usually end up bench-fabbing special bases to avoid this, and of course any barrel-band base must also be custom-fabbed. Here's a photo of some examples for comparison. Michael's swivel at lower extreme right, Brownell's bbl band for Michael's at lower extreme left, Brownell's Michael's inletted base at middle extreme right, custom Michael's bbl band at middle extreme left, rest is larger Win SG size. The big solid blocks will become bbl band bases. Using these SG swivels is somewhat of a PITA but IMO they are FAR, FAR more appropriate for certain rifles than the Michael's or even Jaegers. For instance a reproduction or retro version of any prewar bolt rifle would most certainly NOT have been equipped with the smaller Michaels'-type swivels, they hadn't even been developed when these rifles were being made. And besides, any old Tom, Dick or Harry can have the smaller Michael's or Jaegers, you see 'em on everyone's rifles these days....
