Well, I think this is where this needs to go. I have a full year to build this thing and it'll probably take that. Here in Ohio, we are now allowed to hunt with pistol caliber rifles. This is the first year, and I fully intended on hunting it with a 45-70 Mauser. With a few obstacles in my way I was prevented from doing so. So with a full year ahead, I decided to build a new rifle. The heart of the rifle is a so so Siamese Mauser, it'll be chambered in 450 Marlin.

All parts will be installed by myself, it'll be stocked and blued by myself, and as a one man show and working full time it'll go by slow, but steady if Murphy doesn't interject much. So with no further a due onto the pictures.

I'm also contouring the barrel, .650" at the muzzle @ 18".

I'll post more as I make more.

Adam

Really nice bolt handle and nicely shaped bolt knob, but it looks quite long, and it also appears that you attached it quite a ways away from the bolt body. Hope you don't hit your low mounted scope with it.

It looks like it from the pictures, but the handle should clear the scope I have planned to use on it. If it doesn't I'll scallop the top for clearance. As to length, I haven't anyone complain a large "handle" Smiler

I got the barrel mostly turned today, it's a PITA to turn off .650" at it's thinnest part on a short bed SB Heavy10.

I am waiting on my plate to get ground so I can start my surface grinding jig and get the action welded (dust cover spots) and then surface ground.

It seems to be moving fast, but I know ole' Murph is in the bush, somewhere.

For those that like the bolt handle :

The receiver isn't notched. The way the bolt is welded and finished there isn't a need to adjust the timing again. I'll post pics tomorrow if I can remember.

I got both pm's and I'll get to you tonight.

Now let your mind drift here a bit ........

Then this next one isn't a possibility worth the modification. The Siamese and 98 firing pins are totally different. Maybe if I get the wild hair. See old Murphy hangs around here.

Fyi. You can make yugo Mauser firing pins work. Just need to extend the protrusion a little. Last one I did I found a pin with a broken tip and retipped it.

Did you use a fixture like Strattons on the lathe to turn the radius on the barrel?

Aaron,

I used the compound rest and adjusted the radius until I got what I wanted.

Just a few random pics, the barrel is contoured and polished to 80 grit.

I would reconsider the 450 Marlin. It exists simply because Marlin wanted to hotrod the 45-70 and was concerned over the liability issues if someone stuck a high pressure 45-70 round in a Trapdoor or such and blew it up.

Just do it in 45-70 and enjoy cheaper, more readily available brass. The 45-70 does have the advantage of having been chambered in handguns for the last three or four decades. IE, Contenders.

Got the dividing head in and going to make some time to finish up the barrel. With the outside being -17 it makes it tough to work, even with heat. I will post more as it comes.

Am enjoying the views of your progress.
What machines are you using. Any CNC or is it all progressing based on your master craftsmanship and manually advanced cutters.

Bob, it's all manual machines. My two main machines are, a very late model SB Heavy 10 short bed, and a Wells Index machine. I have a Ellis dividing head and wild imagination. Mr. Myers, the one goading me, also inspires with his work. No CNC's in the shop, although I am sure as things progress it will happen.

The problem is finding time for the project. Running a full time shop is problematic for personal projects Smiler
