Does anyone know if there is enough steel in a M70 Magnum Classic action to build a 338 Lapua?

And does anyone know how much work it would take to build a Badger Ordnance bottom metal with the extended magazine to fit?

I think I would look for a heavier receiver with a larger tenon.

It can be done but it isn't a good idea. CDI makes bottom metal for M70s, but you are still limited to the AI magazines 3.6" COAL.

You should be fine doing a Win 70 custom; if that is what ya gotta have.... Plenty of guys have converted rem 700s which are even shorter oal.

That said, you are looking at quite a project; beaucoup bux. Boltface mods, action mods, detachable mag system, stock and barrel. Over $3k unless you don't go for an F-class or Tactical stock, but you almost have to.

For about the same money or likely less, look at the Sako TRG 42. Ready to go, great quality, designed from the get-go for the Lapua Mag ctg.

Buy a used one and shoot it while your new 1:9.5 or faster twist barrel is on order. Lots of used .338 Lapua mags for sale. After the WOW factor wears off it still costs you about $5 a round to shoot it.

Before you spend a lot of money on a rifle that will have very little resale value, look at what the snipers or F-class, bench guys are shooting. Accuracy Intl or Sako are most common off the rack choices, but both are on par with any custom. Sako is the best value, unless Savage is an option for you.

Bottom metal isn't the problem. The .700" bolt face is the problem. You need a bigger bolt to do it properly.
