I am looking at having a custom rifle in .300 WM built next year....

Does anyone have experience with McWhorter Custom Rifles? If so, can you share your experience?

http://www.mcwhorterrifles.com/

Also, can anyone recommend another quality custom builder in that price range, or lower, that uses similar materials? (McMillan stocks, Hart barrels, etc...)

Thanks guys.

A friend hunts exclusively with McWhorter rifles and is a big fan of them.

Another "accuracy" builder who produces similarly-priced rifles is Tactical Rifles (www.tacticalrifles.net). I have used roughly a dozen of their rifles over the past 5 or so years and there wasn't one of them that wouldn't shoot amazingly well.

For that money, the accuracy guarantee and the custom loaded up ammo? Man, I don't know if you can beat that, but it makes me want one. I watched their video too, at 550 yards. impressive, granted the scope was worth more than any of my rifles, but it shows what their guns are capable of.

I'm a big fan of the Hill Country Rifles guys. Not only their full-up custom guns, which appear to be in the same price range as McWhorter, but also their "Harvester" line, which are accurized factory barreled actions bedded into a McMillan stock. One big plus for HCR is their accuracy guarantees are with factory ammo, not handloads. Half inch or better for the full customs and usually half to 3/4" with the Harvester rifles. Call Matt at HCR ans see what they have in the pipeline being built - maybe they have something that interests you in the Harvester line - save some money for a scope and ammo.

I have a friend from GA who has several McWhorter rifles and hunts all sorts of NA big game with them. He loves them.

If you go to their website they list the rifles ready for sale as well as those in production.

For that kind of moola.. I'd buy a Blaser, or Mauser M03...

If I had to have a custom, I'd go to someone like Tip Burns in Canyon Lake and just have him build what I wanted.

just my 2 cents...

I know this is going a little off track Wade--but really take a hard look at this. I have Shot a Blaser since 1999, and have used Mauser M03's and a Sauer 200/202 extensive. They are fine firearms/they are just a little too expensive for a lot of the US hunters price point.

Sauer tends to be a good bargain--selling for about 60% of retail in most places. I have a Sauer 200 with a supressed .308 (YHM TI can), with also a 9.3x62 barrel--it is a fine, accurate and smooth weapon-- its a 1/2 in gun with both barrels.

Take a hard look at these-- this set has two barrels ( each barrel is about $1100 now--and the syn stock runs around $900--I know sounds stupid but it is)

This is an older 202 when Mcmillian was making stocks for them. It will be a little on the heavier than the new 202's but you could get you a 257 WBY mag barrel and mag--plus set up a EAW swing mount for your scope for what the McWhorter would cost.

Just my thoughts again.

I bought a used one about 4-5 years ago and I couldn't ask for more. It is a 338 mag with an Ed Brown action, just a wonderful gun.

It shoots just about anything well that I have put through it. Would be one of the last guns that I would part with.

Took it to Africa on a plains game hunt. The gun made me look like a much better shot than I am.

I am a lefty as is it.
